R50/53 17" Spare tire???
The spare's the same no matter what type of wheels you have. It doesn't match the wheels its a compact one, otherwise known as a donut. Its only meant to let you limp up to 50 miles to the next tire dealer to get your real tire repaired or replaced.

You can and should use your original spare that came with the Cooper regardless if you have 13,14,15,16,17,18,19 or 20 inch rims. It's the outer diameter of the TIRE that matters, and not the inner diameter of the wheel itself (aside from brake clearance issues).
I don't like the cost & poor performance of Run Flats. I bought a Mini-Fini Spare Tire carrier for ~ $500 and carry a full size wheel and tire on the continental kit carrier. If you buy a set of run-flats, you will pay for the carrier. BMW should include the continental carrier as an option if the Germans had any common sense. I hear the 2006+ cars are more easily maintained.

ditched the run-flats after 6k mi. (the fronts were bald and peeling-it wasn't rubber all the way around anymore
now I've got BFG KDWs, no spare, no fix-a-flat.
If something goes wrong there's MINI 24-hour road side assistance, also I have heard that the state of Texas provides a similar service, but I think most people don't know about it.
I figured if I got a flat, I'd still have to take it to the nearest shop, so it won't cause me to miss more than I would
