Weird Humming/whinning noise?!?!

Hey guys, I got myself a 2002 Mini a few months ago and now about 3-4 second after I turn the car on there is this whinning/humming noise comming out of it. Sounds somewhat electrical but cannot figure out where it comes from or how to stop it. It's quite annoying because I can hear it from inside the car and out!

(When people ask me what that sounds is I simply say nothing and raise the sounds system... lol )

Any ideas?

My guess is power steering. Mine has been doing that as well.

Don't worry, all the first gen cars sound that way. You'll learn to love it.

wow this is my first post, such quick replies!

Well I noticed when I turn my steering it actually gets a little quieter but its always there! Would there be a way to easily fix that? I was searching for a power streering liquid but I don't think Mini's have that right?

Should I get that checked or simply live with the sound? lol

MINI's do have a power steering res. It's in the back of the engine above the headers. The cap has a green circle on it I believe.

If you get it checked, the dealer will just tell you it's normal. In this case, they'll be right.

"Fixing it" is not an option; it's not broke. The power steering pump is electric, not driven by the engine. The electric motor is 'whiney'; it's the nature of the beast. Just make sure you use only MINI/BMW power steering fluid -Pentosin CHF 11S. Do not use ps fluid purchased at an auto parts store, they don't carry the stuff you need. Using regular ps fluid will have dire consequences.
Trust me, the noise becomes unnoticable as the fun factor increases.

Now... if they could just get the exhaust to make more noise than the supercharger at 7000 rpm.. .
