yeah I could never leave you people! you've been my source of all things MINI!!

Speaking of, I have a question. When I set my OBC to the curent mpg setting, there seems to be no constant. Not even close. It bounces around anywhere from 24.3 to 64.5 to 99.9 to 76.2 all in a matter of seconds! It is ALL OVER the place! Is this accurate? It never stays in one general vicinity for any period of time. I know it won't ALWAYS read 26.2 or whatever, but shouldn't it be in the "high 20s" or "low 30s" most of the time?! The one that states the average fuel consumption appears correct- it usually reads 26-29. Should I have the dealer look at this?

And happy holidays to my cwfnc friends!

This is normal. The "instant" fuel milage is calculated by the computer from engine load (usually vacuum) and vehicle speed. BMW has a traditional guage on the bottom of the dash. When you're going up a hill, the load on the engine increases and the instant milage will drop. Even if it's a slight hill. It can drive you nuts. My old Audi had it and I had to make sure to switch it to something else or I'd spend way too much attention to it, constantly trying to modulate the throttle for the highest instant I could get. Naturally, when costing towards a stop (good vehicle speed, w/ no engine load) the instant milage will be very high - up to 99.9.

Spoonleg!

I don't think there's anything wrong with your OBC. The computer re-samples the consumption constantly. If you put the clutch in and coast, it will shoot up to 99.9, and if you floor it, it will drop to 5 or 6. The only way you'll get a number close to the average figure is if you cruise along at a constant pace with the same throttle setting, e.g. on the highway with the cruise control set. The computer samples too often for the number to be close to the real average in stop and go driving.

Now, if you're talking about the average mileage setting, the same logic applies. When you reset the average consumption, it immediately starts sampling the mileage and recalculating the average mileage every fraction of a second. The "average" will vary widely right after you reset it, and the numbers will look a lot like the instantaneous mileage reading. The longer you drive, the more accurate the average will become, because it will be sampling over a longer and longer period of time. Let it go for a few dozen miles, and you'll start to get a more realistic number.

I need to say it one more time: Spoonleg!

Spoonleg: The way I read it, the AVERAGE MPG will be constant, by definition. The CURRENT MPG is reading your 'real time' MPG as you are driving, so it must fluctuate. As you take your foot off the gas, it will increase , and as you speed up it will drop. At a constant speed (say with cruise control) it may relatively stable but it is not very useful as a gauge of anything, just interesting. of course I could be wrong...

HOTWLZ ia incredible! I love the color. The foliage sets off the car beautifully. Hmmm, I wonder how much repainting would cost....

okay my troubles worsen...

Oct. 30: Voicemail from dealer: "Should be in on Nov. 10 or 15 shipment.

Nov. 19 phone conversation with sales rep:

KURTSTER: if the car is coming in after this Friday ***. 21, I'll be away on vacation so please hang on to it and I'll pick it up after I return.
SALES GUY: It looks based on what I can tell that it will probably be in Sat. Nov. 22
KURTSTER: Great! I arrive back home Monday Dec. 1 I'll pick it up at 5pm
SALES GUY: (pause as if checking calendar) Okay. I won't be working, but I'll let Matt know and he'll have it ready for you.
KURTSTER: Terrific! Oh, and will you be installing an of the options that I ordered with it prior to delivery?
SALES GUY: Um, not really. We don't usually put those on before delivery. you'll have to buy them from our parts dept. and arrange to have them put on.
KURTSTER: Well, okay but thats kind of a bummer since you'll have it all that time.
Sales guy: Yeah. Sorry. That's pretty much just our policy.

Monday Dec. 1, 1:00 pm. Between flights from Boston to Orange County at San Jose...
I call the dealership and ask for the MINI showroom (as I always do). I get transfered and after several rings I get an answering machine for the dealer saying they're all unavailable, please leave a message.

My message: Hi my name is Kurt. On Nov. 19, I arranged with Tony to get my MINI at 5pm today and haven't heard anything. I'll be flying in at 3pm and I no longer hve a car so I'm arranging for drop off at your dealership to just drive home from there. If there have been any changes, please contact me immediately so I can make other arrangements. Otherwise, I'll see you at 5 pm.

5pm I arrive at the dealer, luggage and all after not having heard anything.

DUDE WORKING SHOWROOM (Not matt): Um. Sorry, It's not here yet. Did someone tell you it came in?
KURTSTER: No, I left a detailed message today about the arrangements I made with Tony for pickup tonight. I previously received a message saying it was likely to be in the 15th and I spoke to Tony and he said it should be in Nov. 22. Here we are shooting for several days into December!
DUDE: We never guarantee a date of arrival.
KURTSTER: It wasn't guaranteed but there was a definite date on my voice mail.
DUDE: (after researching with Matt) Sorry man. It's in Oxnard right now. We got a lot of cars in this shipment but yours wasn't one of them just yet.
KURTSTER: Okaaay. Why did someone leave me voicemail to tell me this?
DUDE: We did but couldn't reach you.
KURTSTER: you left me voice mail?
DUDE: We tried calling while you were on vacation and our manager tried today and we couldn't reach you.
KURTSTER: What about the message I left you today? I said all the details in it.
DUDE: We didn't get any message from you today.
KURTSTER:WOW! So not only did my Sprint cellular voicemail NOT work properly to record your urgent calls to me, but your machine ALSO malfunctioned on the same day! What are the chances?!
DUDE: Yeah. We're not trying to jerk you around or nothing, man it just isn't here.
KURTSTER: Great. How the hell am I gonna get to work tomorrow? What about the next day? What about getting back here to buy the damm thing when it arrives? Do you have loaners or rentals I can use? Can you help me out here?
DUDE: We're not in the rental business or loaner business so we don't have anything to send you off with. I mean, we don't just hand over $25,000 cars to people.
KURTSTER: (trying to contain himself) That's a smart-*** remark that was totally unnecessary. OF COURSE you aren't in that business. Are you saying that when a custmer brings a BMW in next door, they don't sometimes send them off with a loaner?
DUDE: Yeah, but you have to have a car in for repair.
KURTSTER: Okay. Can I RENT a car then? I need to go home and work tomorrow.
DUDE: Yeah. I'll call Enterprise. They rent cars.

SO HERE I AM DRIVING A G.D. HONDA CIVIC FOR $40/day.
Did I set a record for late arrival here?
My previous post was incorrect BTW. My build date was OCTOBER 10, not Oct. 17.
It is looking like December 10 is a possiblity, making me one of the first I've seen on record as having a 2 month build-to-delivery time.

Kurtster, I'd be having serious discussions with them about taking the price of airfare and rentals off the top of your car. This behavior is inexcusable and you should not be held accountable for those costs. Our cars were built after yours, and we've received shipment via Port Hueneme to Oregon already.

I'm such a stickler for holding people accountable in service jobs, as it seems that the notion of "responsibility" is a foreign concept to all too many.

Don't settle for less than you deserve--ever!

...and best of luck. Keep us posted.

ragdollcatz,

well, thanks for the fall foliage thumbs up, but I think we'll take the mountains. I bet you have a much easier time finding fun roads out there. Here in central IL they are hard to come by. But we sure have fun planning road trips. Happy Holidays!

Kurtster,
Sorry for your hassle. That's quite a bummer but sounds like our local Volkswagon dealer - some of these guys don't get it. Best of luck.

I even looked at the source of the page and the code is iddentical for my post and others that have pictures showing. I can't figure it out.

OK, now I think I have it! I still could use some tips on resizing using standard windows supplied programs though.

Hi myblkmini! With your MINI trapped at the "Vehicle prision center", you may see it in a few days, or a week+ from now. Give your dealership a jingle and ask if their daily status updates show anything.

BLeughk! lots of full-throttle plus heavy traffic and a dyno pull session equals yukkie gas mileage, this past tank was 24.4MPG, which pulled down my overall average to 26.4MPG. I now have 1777 on MM2, and still A-OK...mostly. My passenger door speaker rattle is back like your ex that accidentally on purpose left their clothes at your place. Sounds like I'll have to get the speaker replaced; it definitely has that voice-coil rubbing on the magnet structure sound. (yuk)

Still lots of smiles per mile, had a couple pull up next to me tonight and just about have seizures they loved the car so much, it was hilarious!
Cheers,
Ryan

Observations on the Reaction of Homo Sapiens to the MINI Cooper S

Note: This is not a controlled study and your experience may differ.

Mature females of the species don't take notice (or pretend not to).

Very young females of approximately four years of age have extremely positive emotional outbursts, and will go to great lengths to keep a MINI in sight.

The young males of the species, approximately 12 to 24 years of age, show tendencies toward escalated behavior demonstrated by various hand motions, physically excited/aggressive (though positive) body movements, and varied facial expressions including awe and joy. In a group setting, the reactions escalate. These behaviors are more prominent in the younger males, and temper as age increases. There is a fascinatingly consistent trait in the teenage male (14 to 18 years of age), with 100% consistency: The utterance: "Is it supercharged?"

Older males of the species take a more active role in their interactions with the machine than the younger males, primarily one of assuming an "alpha" role complete with asking for, assuming possession of, the keys for a brief period of time. Also noted is a tendency, in this group, to "fondle" various interior and exterior features.

Gawd, this is a fun car to own!

Ragdollcatz/Dannette

I was at a stop light on the way to work the other day, and the woman in the car next to me asked me if she could "Ask me a personal question." She proceeded to grill me about the MCS, what it costs, where it's made, etc. Then she picked up her cell phone and called somebody, and I heard her say "I just saw the car I want! It's called a MINI Cooper!"
