Gas mileage in modified "S"

Just Bought a 03 "S" and it is great . Its a race car ie.superlap champion .The former owner said he got 27 to 30 mpg .I however have to be carefull to get 23mpg. I sometimes carry 4 people and drive with the a/c on in traffic. but still should i get it checked ? It has allmost everything on it including milteck catless header and exaust ,19% pullie, alta air cleaner, big intercooler, brakes suspention and hood scoop.

All the people getting 27-30 mpg are mainly driving to work or whatever on the highway. Anyone that typically drives around the city will get 23-26, unless they don't hit any lights and cruise in 5th all day long.

pmfranke- don't forget we've got those big rocky green and brown things we have to drive over to get to the other side of the island. I bet BR was able to just cruise down the Kalanianiole / H1 to work!

Tell 'ya what - I'll loan you the Subaru and I'll ...erm... "borrow" your MINI for a while to test it. I'll just need you to sign here first... oh wait, this? Oh yeah - it looks like the title, but it's uh... a ... "rental agreement"

Uhm...gas costs over $3.00 a gallon? I *love* to drive. Always have. Even I have cut back my cruising trips.

I know your MINI well, I have many of the same mods on my 2003 MCS.
When my car was new and stock, I got 33 mpg in Hawaii using stock wheels mostly highway.

Since then I have added many mods that increase performance and rob mpg. Don't expect too much when you've had mods for performance.

Things that help performance can sometimes help efficiency and mpg (at least in theory) but you have to drive smoothly and not get on the gas too hard.

Pulley upgrade- doesn't hurt mpg unless you stomp on the gas and give it wide open throttle

larger injectors/ ECU tuning/ larger throttle body - might allow for greater use of fuel to match greater air flow/intake. Not a big problem unless you are driving with higher speeds and more throttle.

Things that don't help mpg-
Sitting in urban traffic
Driving over hills/mountains- driving uphill fast kills mpg
Driving on the track or anytime at full throttle
Heavy wheels
Tires with greater rolling resistance- wide tires.
Low tire pressure
Driving in lower gears at higher rpms.

That's the trade off between performance and fuel econemy. If you go easy you can get decent mileage, but what's the point?

Yes. So as an experiment I put on stock holey rims and stock tires with as little rolling resistance and weight as possible (175/65-15) and I drive around as slowly as possible keeping to the speed limit. I stay out of high grid lock urban areas and if I drive like a "Prius" owner then I've gotten 29 mpg with all my performance mods.

Sadly, it takes tremendous self control and I often cannot hold back and do this for much more than about 100 miles at a time. Plus the MINI is just too fun to be that restrained.

It's nice to know that a modded MINI can reach high 20s in mpg. If I don't pay attention then with mixed city and hwy driving I usually get about 23-25 mpg most of the time. If it makes you feel any better in heavy traffic my ecobox CIVIC gets about 25 in mixed driving and about 30 mpg in mostly hwy driving.

That's always been my problem, especially with a car that sounds good like the MINI. (Well, the supercharged version at least) I had a late 80s Toyota Tercel for a while...even that got the lead foot treatment.

I average a consistant 27 MPG. This is 90% highway, 10% leadfoot. On a recent cross-country trip, strictly highway and the ball-and-chain in the car, it averaged 32. It can be done, but do you want to?

No one mentioned rolling diameter of the tires yet; I can get good mileage from low profile tires, then when taller tires go on, the mileage suffers. In reality the distance is the same but the odometer records more miles with smaller tires so the calculation appears optimistic. If GPS is used for the calculation then it won’t make much difference.

FWIW, I get about 23 also. Most of my driving is up or down the H3. The biggest factor is that my gas pedal is a binary switch - its either on or off.

I usually get about 30 mpg give or take, mixed highway and city, and I'm on it more than I should be .

Mildly modified, 06 MCS with 18".

A week average, around town/high way, spirited driving every now and then, 25.2 mpg.

I got 42 mpg on the interstate once, though I was drafting a semi at a dangerous interval going 70mph.
