I need brakes - advice please!

I took my 2004 MCS in for service today, it was making a wierd metal sound coming from the front wheel. Turns out I need new brakes on the front. No big deal I thought until I got the price quote from the dealer - $415.00 for the front only!! I have a little time left on the brakes so I decided to shop around for a better price. I found a shop that only works on BMW products and they quoted me $360.00. Is that a reasonable price or should I continue to shop around? If anyone from the Denver area has found a good shop with a better price please send me the info. I understand the rotors have to be replaced as well as the pads but this still seems expensive to me. Help!

I pulled my stock '06 brakes off at 9k miles to do a JCW swap. I'd happily sell the set for $200/shipped.....should give many miles of service

PGT-
What would I have to pay in labor costs to have them installed? I can't do it myself, would need to still find a good and honest mechanic!

two hours labor or less. do you need just rotors and pads? I was slated to send the calipers to a guy I know in Denver....he wanted spares to paint. I could send him the whole kit...he might be willing to do the install for you....he's not a mechanic but as good as one if you want, I'll ping him for you....could save you some $$

I'm the guy Dan is talking about. If you pay him for the parts, he can ship them to me, and I can help you install them, pads and rotors. You buy the burgers and it is a done deal.

Dan, if he goes for the deal, send the stuff to me, I would gladly help him out.

All I know is this - the service guy at the dealer told me I need new front brakes and that on minis you can't machine the rotors, you have to replace the pads and rotors. So I'm guessing that is all I need. From what I understand brakes are not hard to do, if you know what you are doing (I don't!) so I'd be willing to talk to the guy in Denver.

OMGHI2U!

Jon will take good care of you and your car...he's a pro. Let me know if this works for you....I want the brakes out of my garage, Jon wants the calipers, you want usable brakes for your car without spending a ton.

haha, sorry about that, internet and all, he/she, ya never know.

so, you work out the details with dan, then send me a PM and we can figure out when to do the brakes for your car. The only thing is, I work every weekend, so it would need to be a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday to work on your brakes....evenings work as well, and I live in Parker.

If that sounds good to you, then let's get it done.

Jon

Sounds great to me but one question - how do I know if I need calipers? Should I call the service department and find out? My car has 40,000 miles.

you shouldn't....calipers don't go bad that quick but pads wearing down to the tabs can score you rotors or vibrations can be caused by pad deposits. The normal 'brake job' is pads and rotors.

I sent you an email....NAM is going offline tomorrow night so no replies or PM.

you won't need calipers...those rarely fail. The rotors and pads should do the trick.

I have my original calipers on my car from 2003, and all I have changed are rotors and pads, twice. So, don't even bother asking, in my opinion. The calipers should last you well over 100K miles before a rebuild is in order.
