R50/53 Feet too wide for Mini pedal placement?
I test drove an S today, and have driven one once before. I liked it, but on both test drives my size 12D feet, which aren't really very big by today's standards, kept hitting adjacent pedals. It was mostly my right foot hitting the gas and brake pedal at the same time. Has anyone else had this problem, and is there a solution - for example, is there a way to adjust the pedals? I'm thinking the answer is no but thought I'd bounce it off you all on the forum.

actually it keeps happening to me lately..i think it aids in heel/toe driving..but not really if you have big feet

I had the same problem and I have only size 10 feet. I adjusted over time. First few weeks I kept glancing off the brake when I stepped on the gas. I'm still not mad about the pedal positions, but I don't press two pedals at the same time any more. I have to say, though, I have given up trying to heel-and-toe with this car. It is the first stick shift I haven't been able to do this with.

I wear an 11.5, when i can find one, or a big size 11 when i can't, which is definitely more common. I've had similar pedal issues but it does get better with time. The problem is definitely worse with certain shoes, though, particularly running shoes that flare out at the soles.
For me, a more annoying problem is hitting my right leg against the console. It just hits me in the wrong place, near the knee, and makes long commutes tiresome.
Good luck with your purchase.

I had the same problem as well. I'm an 11 size foot. Sometimes more depending on the shoe. You get used to it eventually. Practice makes perfect. Once you have the car long enough, you'll adjust to it I'm sure.
First day of having my MCS and going to work was ridiculous because I have to wear steel toed safety boots. That did not work well at all. I had to pull over and take them off. It just wasn't happening.
But like mentionaed already, it's all about the shoe. Driving without shoes would maybe fix your situation, but I don't think you'd go that far. Maybe find a good fitting narrow driving shoe that works well with all or most of your wardrobe.
There's gotta be a way. Don't give up the car due to that. Find a good shoe, and retake the test drive. I'm sure the sales person that you were dealing with will understand if you tell them the situation, and that now you want to really see how the car is.
If you have a girlfriend/wife, I'm sure she'll help you find a good shoe. Mine has 26 pairs, and still going. And I'm sure she'll be thrilled that you're going to her for help in the area of shopping.
Cheers,

Maybe the MINI folks have been aware of this problem since they are coming up with this "two shoes in one" option later this year:

everyone go out and get a pair of chuck taylor all stars not only will you look great (like me) but there also alot narrower but they still will fit up to a d in width. i run around in seize 11.5 and i had no problem with my test drive yesterday
Funny this should actually come up today. Just yesterday, I took the S out for another test drive (makes 3). But, this time I drove for the first time (gotta learn stick sometime, and its not my car!!). I couldn't even get my foot to the gas with the clogs I had on. Had to remove them to perform basic maneuvers. All kinds of fun though with out the shoes on. One problem though, and I may be the only one on the site that has this problem. I noticed a definite odor coming from my dogs. Problem is, if I gotta drive barefoot, others may take issue with this. Though, it would be their problem!
But, the chuck taylor idea, I like it!! And, ya know, it might just all be alright if I can find a pair of these. I think they fit with the whole MINI school of thought.

Thanks for the replies gang. I test drove a regular Cooper today and the problem wasn't as bad. One thing I noticed (these were both used cars) - the owner of the S had two sets of floor mats, the bottom layer being carpet mats he bought from the dealer, the top layer being clear plastic mats he bought someplace like Walmart and trimmed to fit. The Cooper I drove today only had the dealer-bought rubber mats. I wouldn't have thought that extra little bit of height would make a difference but it did. ...Unless the Cooper and S have different pedal placements or something; I kind of doubt that.
I don't think tis issue will stop our purchase. This is eventually going to be my son's car, and I like having all the airbags standard and the extra structural integrity compared to the Asian competition. Plus there is very big "cool factor" associated with the Mini.
I have a couple of other regular Cooper questiions too, which I'll post separately.

I'm trying to remember if this ever bothed me also, but as long as I don't wear my old steeltoe work boots, it's never been an issue for me.. (and even then it's not much of a problem..)

I have size 12 feet and it really depends on what shoes I am wearing. If the shoes are "hefty" at all, I will have problems with the pedals. In that case I usually take my shoes off - or slide the seat back a little further. Seems that the angle my legs are at, as detirmined by the seat position, can make a big difference.

Intersting. I'll have to check into that. I only really have one pair of shoes where I totally feel in control at the pedals. MINI having their own line of shoes. Pretty cool. Other shoes work, but have a slight disadvantage. Always looking for a perfect driving shoe.
Reminds me of that damn Neon commercial now with the chick at the shoe store trying on several different shoes. Then settles on one but only takes the one shoe on her right foot I think it is.
Cheers,
I only wear a 10 1/2 D but about half of my driving I have done with hiking boots on (they are a very comfortable walking shoe). At first I had some promlems with pressing the brake and clutch at the same time but as others have said I got used to it. It isn't much of a problem.
I asked a lot of questions abou the MINI's size before I ordered mine as I am 6' 4" and all of the responses were NO PROBLEM...
But the topic of having Feet to match a 6' 4" frame never came up!
It is pretty damn tight down there - it definately makes a difference in what you have on your feet - I agree that bearfoot is the best - but I don't think the folks at the tracks are going to allow that if I ever get the chance.
I am NOT going to attend enough driving schools to order a pair of $195 shoes, but the next best alternative to the Chuck Tanners - is a mid cut WRESTLING shoe!

I wear 13EEE, and I end up driving barefooted quite often. I had soon contemplated moving (actually bending) the brake and clutch pedals over by about an inch and a half, but that was stymied when I discovered the clutch arm is PLASTIC.
As was said before, the MINI is a great barefoot car to drive.

Thanks all, I will look into your suggestions. I will need to, as I just made a deal to buy the used S I drove Saturday. It's Chili Red with White roof/mirrors, leatherette, 17" alloys, DSC, and the premium, sport and cold weather packages. Just about everything but leather, the Harmon Kardon stereo and NAV (it does have Xenons). It has 8,000 miles on it and is in great shape. The owner's selling it to pay for a restoration to another (non-Mini) car and of course has mixed emotions about selling it.
My 16-year-old son and his friends are excited (as am I of course). It'll be my car but I do plan to let him drive it.
Now where's that Moss Mini catalog I had lying around....

HOT car! Sounds like you got a great deal...you're gonna love it!
And to stay on topic...size 12s, adjusted in a week or so to the little pedals. Now it's no problem, and it will help when I finally learn to heel/toe.
Have a blast with your new toy, and keep us updated! Welcome to MCO...
