R50/53 Radiator Fans (Grinding)
Radiator Fans (Grinding)
Need some help with this one...
I did a NAM search for "Radiator Fans" and didn't come up with the answer, so I am going to post it here.
Last night I was running the car pretty hard and when I came in to town (at a stop light), my radiator fans came on and I heard a horrible grinding sound from them. The car shook a tad when they were on, and they only stayed on for a minute or so. Is this a common problem with the 2002's? I saw a few posts regarding the power steering fans, but not much on the actual radiator fans.
I am only assuming it is the radiator fans, becuase they kicked on when the car was warm, and i wasn't moving.
Anyone else had this happen?

Thanks!

I haven't heard of any problems with the cooling fans. Maybe something got caught in the blades. If you want to make sure that it's the fans, turn the A/C on; this will usually cause the fans to come on at low speed. They will click over to high speed once the coolant temp is high enough.
I've had this happen too. My mechanic even replaced the fan, but that didn't fix it. He ended up bleeding some freon out of the AC system and the problem has minimized but is not completely fixed.
One thing you can check is to turn off the AC when you hear this sound. For me, the grinding sound stops 6 seconds after turning off the AC. Again, it only happens when very hot and running the AC.
I would like to hear what you find out since I am still having this minor problem.
