Watch the Surgery-Pully Operation Invite
Watch the Surgery-Pully Operation Invite
PittStop MINI members (Pittsburgh) will be having a member grass-roots "Supercharger Reduction Pulley Replacement Operation" (I understand somebody has copyrighted Pulley Party
) at Paul Miller's house on Saturday January 21st, 2006. Paul and his brother have successfully performed this surgery on Paul's own car and is willing to help me install mine. If we have time I might add the short shifter too.
If anyone is interested in coming to watch and learn, you are certainly welcome. If you plan on giving lame advice there will be a $50 admission charge.
Please PM me for the address and details.)
In addition, the nice people at www.cravenspeed.com have offered our club a deal that is hard to refuse. If we can come up with 5 people to buy their pulley they will get a 10% discount and the club will get a free puller tool. Most places that sell you a pulley will rent or loan you a tool but you still have to get it back to them. If you are interested in signing up to get a pulley at a discount, please PM me also.
I think Paul can even be convinced to help you with the installation if provided with enough pizza and beer. I know I'll be bringing some with me. I also hope to take some photos if anyone is interested in a step by step.
BTW, any MINI owner is welcome. You don't have to be a PittStop club memeber.

Color me there. I'll bring at least one six pack. If the weather is nice I might even drive Mel!
Already have a pulley, so I can't take advantage of the discount - but I hope some folks do!

First, without trying to beat dead horses, the Magnuson-Moss Act requires them to prove that said aftermarket part caused whatever problem comes into question. (And, of course, this is only an issue at all if you actually have a problem that you need the warranty for.) So, it is impossible for them to void your entire warranty for a pulley. Neither does it affect the 3yr/36k scheduled maintenance.
The JCW kit provides a known reduction of 13.8% - so a 15% pulley isn't much to worry about. (And if Randy Webb is correct, Eaton designed the supercharger for use with a pulley the size of the 15% one.)
In my experience, MoP has been relatively lenient with mods - but they aren't going to roll over either. If it is questionable whether a mod you've done is related to a problem you're having, they won't be afraid to tell you. Just remember that, according to the M-M Act, they are responsible to prove that it is causing the problem, not just vocalize a suspicion. Of course, this could result in a long delay without you car depending on the nature of the issue that arises.
...In short, I wouldn't worry too much about a 15% pulley - but there are no absolute guarantees.

...I'm not sure why, but when I read that last comment it had a bit of the MINI DIVISION robotic, mechanical ring to it.
(If you've seen any of their posts here on NAM you'll know what I mean.) Well, I got a chuckle from it at least!
PS. Like your photo in the Calendar!

Thanks for the compliment too

I'll be at the World of Wheels show on Saturday, won't be able to make the pulley party
Our pictures were a little spotty.
...But, here is probably one of the better How-To's with photos and write-up by Randy Webb (of Webb Motorsports) for your reference.
