Other NAM VW nuts? Other Euro?

Noticing a trend... NAM members with VWs, or VW experiences (good and bad)

So... how many other NAM members are (or have been) VW fans? Post up, with your current or previous VWs.... pics are great. Other car history is OK too, I guess!

us: Previous: '76 Rabbit, '85 Jetta & Golf, '00 Passat 1.8t stick wagon, '91 SCCA SSB 16v GTI, '90 GLI, '93 Cabrio, still have '84 16v Cabrio (resto project).

I owned a '73 Superbeetle before the MINI. It was a pretty fun car, it just got really hot at any time and any season.

I drove a 1976 Rabbit, then owned a 1982 Rabbit S (for 21 years), then my MINI.
My wife owned a 1978 Rabbit Convertible, then a 1984 Rabbit Convertible,
(for 18 years) and now has a 2001 Cabrio.

I've had an 85-86' Jetta gas and diesel, 96' TDI Golf and always wanted a Mk2 Golf GTI or Corrado.

I bought a "78 Scirocco and kept it for 25 years and loved it. AutoX'ed it for 10 years and it still had the original clutch in it. Had a bunch of mods at the end and was making about 135 HP. Not bad for a NA 1.5L mech fuel injection car!

I had 2 VW's before my MCS. I leased a '96 GTI 5-speed (2.0L) in Catalina Blue metallic, and then a '00 Golf GL 5-speed (2.0L).

I love the GTI platform, and would feel very comfortable in returning to VW someday, (in addition to my current MCS).

Im a HUGE VW fan, and although i love my MINI alot, Old VW's (air-cooled) have always been my true love.

Here is my first car i ever owned, bought when i was 17...except this is after about 4 years of restoration/customizing.

Needless to say...it is not finished yet...but hopefully soon!

Also i just sold this car recently to be able to afford my MINI.

Its a 1968 VW typeIII "Notchback" with about 32-36hp to the wheels.
It was also featured in VW trends Magazine in 2002 called "Diamond in the Rough"

If anyone ever wants to talk about air-cooled Vee-dubs, let me know! I plan on buying a late 50's/60's Bug and making it a Drag Car, or a 73 1303 super beetle and making it a German looker.

all in good time....hehe

Does this count?

Made by VW, designed and sold by Porsche.

Porche 914? hmm....well i beleive more VW owners have transplated that engine into their car than actual 914 owners.

so i would say yes! Nice wheels.

As much as I would like to keep it I am thinking of selling when the MINI arrives. I know that once it starts to sit I will want to fix a few things. It gets expensive at this stage where the engine is fine and now it is time for things like paint and body seals etc....

I Hated to sell my Notchback, but it really helped me place a big down payment. Lowered my monthly payments a lot in doing so. At this point in time i am still young and it is hard for me to afford more than 1 car, let alone trying to mod 2 cars.

But once i get in the situation where i can afford my Daily Driver and also have a project/hobby/weekend warrior. Then i will be buying another VW in a heart beat! Now that im moving to Vegas, CA. VW speed shops will be close enough to drive to on the weekends!

I think im going to have a 2110cc (2.1L) turbo engine in a bug. That way i can have the benefits of a very large stroke, but keep the cylinder walls thick (90.5mm pistons) for the heat and for added strength of the turbo.

300hp in a 1600-1800lb car....ooOOOoo...*drools*

Until the mods are thrown at it. Here is Kurt Metzger's 68 VW bug. It is completely street legal and "all steel". I believe its the fastest all steel street legal VW bug. It has a 2276cc turbo engine making about 500hp at 7K RPM with 25 lbs of boost.

Here is a clip of it drag racing (on a track) against a Big Block V8 Camero. Kurt hits a 10.06 @140mph.

The Camero runs a 10.23 @ 135mph

GO VW!

I have been drag racing, autocrossing, Circle track racing VW bugs for 32 years. I have written for VW magazines. I just sold a 68 but still have a street car that was a hot VW feature car and a drag car that I won the PRA world finals with. All of my VW buddies want a Mini. I am selling all my bugs to make more room for Mini's. Sorry to say after all these years I have jumped ship. Just the thought of airconditioning, heat, electric windows, leather seats and about 10,000 other creature comforts puts a big smile on my face. Air cooled VW are fun toys. But I really love my Mini.

This is my latest one, I love it to death. I owned too many of them in the past including a 337 GTI which i miss as much as my 05 MCS. VWs are great, so is MINIs. I am planning to add one MINI to my garage next summer and keep it forever.
