You Think Weird Things Happen in Your MINI...
Yea...well listen to this story. This was posted over on elisetalk.com and I thought it was so funny I had to post it over here. Basically, these are two stories from the same guy, that happened in the same parking lot, at two different times.

So, how would you react?
The First:
This has come up a few times on the forums but I'm not sure that there's been a thread for it yet.
What do you all believe is ok for people to do to your car when you leave it unattended in a parking lot?
Read on for a short story of one of my experiences last year:
One morning I went to a French bakery in an upscale part of town so that I could get these particular pastries that my girlfriend at the time really enjoyed. I brought my phone and my camera with into the store because they just happened to be in my cargo shorts still.
I always park in the back of the parking lots when I can. I’ll even take up two spots and if possible share one or more sides with a curb so no one can park on that side of the Elise. This day was no different and I had probably a 3 to 5 minute walk to the store in the strip mall.
I come out to a guy sitting in my car! He’s maybe 40 years old (I’m 28 at the time). He’s gripping the steering wheel and smiling like some madman. As he’s reaching for the shifter I take out my camera and snap a few quick shots.
I ask him, “This is a sweet car, how long have you had it?”
He looks up and says, “Actually ummmm, I’m just borrowing it from a friend.”
I say, “You mind if I take a few pictures of it?”
He says, “Go for it.”
So I took one more picture of him very close up (the others were a bit far away and I wasn’t able to immediately identify him in the viewer). I said, “The cops will love that one when they get here.” He looks at me as I took out my cell phone and his face gets all red.
“This is MY car you *****, and as far as I can tell you’re attempting to steal it.”
(I hit my alarm system and it makes the telltale chirp that it’s been set off recently.) This is when it dawns on the guy that it really IS my car. And panic sets over his face.
I open the door for him and told him to get out of the car. He’s begging me not to call the cops, how he’s some business manager somewhere and that he’s very sorry but he just had to sit in the car because it was so cool. I tell him to explain it all to the police that I wasn’t in the mood for someone who felt they were above social decency and respect for others. I told him to sit on the curb and wait for the cops.
He bolted.
I got a picture of his Cadillac Escalade and the plates. I described the scenario to the dispatcher on the phone who said if there was no damage to the property that there was little they could do. I looked over the car and the portion where he must have stepped on the door and vaulted himself over the window into the driver seat. I saw no damage. It turned out later that there were actually two very small chips out of the paint, but some dirt that was probably from his shoes covered these. I’m still pretty bitter about it.
My question to those of you who read this far what is and/or isn’t acceptable to do to a car when it’s unattended?

The Second:
Same parking lot, same bakery destination a month or so later:
I come out to the car and find a father (35-years old maybe) and son (5 years old) admiring the vehicle. At this point neither of them is touching the car. That’s great; admire the beauty of the machine all you’d like as far as I’m concerned! Even take pictures if you’d like. As I’m standing outside the car and the father is getting closer and asking questions like “how much does one cost, where did you get it, how fast does it go?” .. his son starts LICKING the car. Yes, licking it, like a lollypop.
The licking doesn’t concern me as much as the buttons on his overalls that are starting to clank against the car. I kept my cool and asked politely, “Could you please not let your son touch the car, I’d appreciate it.” He looked at me like I was trying to molest his kid (even though I was a good 10 feet from them), and scowled at me. Then let the kid keep going. I got pretty bent and said, “I just put some pretty harsh chemicals on the car when I cleaned it this morning and your child will likely get very sick if you let him continue.” ONLY then did he quickly yank his kid away, while glaring at me as if I were trying to kill his kid ...
I told him, “Step away from the car please, I need to get going.” I hopped in as fast as I could and took off swearing never to park the car in the lot again … at least not without a video camera on it (I haven’t been back there since). The small scratches that were left from the buttons came out with clay later that evening.
What’s with these adults?
So, warning to those of you who travel to Edina, in Minnesota. You may not want to leave your car alone around the self-righteous wealthy elite that inhabits the area. Several of them believe that they own you and your property.

I have never, ever heard of anything so blatant!!!
My reaction? Avoid Edina, Minnesota!!
My second reaction, avoid an Elise.
Also, it's amazing how many things like this the cops "can do little about." I caught kids trying to break a car's window w/ a chunk of concrete the other day......yup, "little they could do."

It's not just a car thing, either. You would not believe how many people feel it's okay to sit on someone else's unattended motorcycle!
With a Ducati, it's even worse because on some of the older models, the kickstand is spring-loaded to automatically retract when there's no weight on it! So what happens is that some assclown gets on your bike, brings it upright off of the kickstand, makes the "vrooom vrooom" noises until he's bored, and then when he tries to lean the bike back on the kickstand, ends up dropping it on the ground because he doesn't know that the kickstand has retracted!
First thing I did on my bike was to disable the auto-retract kickstand. I'm still working on a way to fire a ten-inch steel spike up out of the seat when someone sits on it uninvited.

And the sad thing is, when the guy with the kid tells the story to his buddies, you're probably the "****-retentive jerk with the Lotus"!
I'm with you, the sense of entitlement some people have regarding other peoples' belongings is astonishing. I'm not even going to get into how people let their kids behave in public...

I think you played it too cool.... I would have walked up and said "please get out of my car, I have already called the police"
the second..... I think you handled pretty well.... tough with kids when parents should know better

You really can't blame the kid. He's heard his daddy say many times....man those Lotus' are sweet cars.
Saying that there were poisonous chemicals on the car, now that was great.

Minnesota - proof positive that Swedish siblings shouldn't marry (a la Ingmar Bergman).
I enjoyed those vignettes, having had similar wierd experiences of "strangers" even following me home to catch a look at one or another of my vehicles (spooky!).
NRA stickers on my rear windows generally discourage anything more than an admiring glance, worth the membership price alone.

Sorry 04, I've had it happen to me twice
First time was in the EuroFest at Greenville, SC in the display area. A couple of us were coming back from a wandering and there were 2 young ladies standing around my car taking pictures. What I didn't notice was another one sitting in the driver's seat, hence the reason for the pictures.
The second time was also at a car show. This one at the AutoFair at Lowes Motor Speedway. We had 2 cars there and I was detailing my wife's car, my back was turned to mine and I hear the familiar "thunk" sound of the door release mechanism. I turn around and there is this 40 something man and his kid climbing into my car
I ask him if there was something I could help him with, which shocked him since he hadn't noticed me. He said, "Oh are these private cars?" I said yes and could he please step out of it. He then tried to lie and say that it was open .
Nice lesson to teach your kid
Wonder what will happen this year :impatient

For the first incident the lesson is to lock your car. The kid licking the car, well get a car wash that tastes like lima beans and a proximity warning alarm
People are ninnies, it is just amazing how they will behave and certainly many don't care to respect other people's property.

Oh and riquiscott - perhaps one of these might help keep people off your bike:

That or maybe some fake dog poo on the seat :D

Eh...according the story, the car WAS locked. The a*hole jumped on the hood and jumped in to the car (I guess the top was not on, on the elise).

As far as the guy that was in skit's car, you got his face and the plate # on his vehicle. If you want to make a stink about it, it's not too hard to find him, and then where he works. Bring the evidence to his immediate supervisor at work, and tell him (her?) what happened, as in, 'look at the judgment one of your employees is capable of exhibiting,' not to mention the lying. That should make his day.
I've had similar things happen back when I still had a motorcycle. Fortunately I also had an alarm on it since I wokred installing car stereos and alarms for a living at the time. I was in the shop working on a car and here my bike alarm go off, so I went out to see what was happening. I find a kid trying to climb on with his mom looking on. So being the calm person I am I yell at her to get her damn kid off my bike. She tries to tell me that he is only trying to stop the noise because it scared him, only problem with this is that the alarm only triggers from a pressure sensor in the seat, meaning he had to get on the seat to set it off. I explain this to her, rather unpolitely, tell her again to get him off it before I do. So she finally does and leaves but it amazed me that she thought it was OK for him to even be near someone else's property, let along climbing all over it. Unfortunately I've become more jaded to it over the last decade and a half since then and while I still think it unacceptable I am no longer surprised by what people do and let their offspring do.
I was at a Football Game and I came out someone had Busted out the windows on my Mini and stole my GPS right out of my dash!!! What are you going to do with the Stock GPS...Doesnt it have a code. Called the Cops and they said they couldnt do anything about it!!! I had to replace it all myself! Lost my car for two days and it cost me a great deal. I just had a crazy Viper PAger Alarm installed so atleast if someone tries anything ill come out and beat them up before they can steal anything.
