Farewell H1...
Farewell H1...
...and don't let the door hit your huge butt on the way out. In what is likely one of the few good decisions made by GM lately, they plan to discontinue sales of the Hummer H1 in June.
The H1 retails for $140,000, though I suspect you could buy it for less if needing a garage for your MINI. If not in motion it would likely stay anchored to the ground. It weight in at 5 tons. Though it does get "less than" 10 mpg in motion, stationary mileage is great. However, purchasers of H1s are a market share that prefers to drive. This may explain why sales are reported to be down to "a trickle".
Hummer lovers shouldn't be too sad. The H2 and even cuter H3 will still be around (asquare?), even though the U.S. sale of Prius's surpasses the number of H1s, H2s, and H3 combined.
Here's the emoticom summing up my reaction.
What's anyone else's? Anyone shedding

It was actually seriously offroad capable (the only real HUMMER in my eyes), and the $140,000 price tag limited the numbers on the road. I think it's a mistake for the HUMMER brand to do away with it.

The serious off-road capability would probably come in handy in Colorado
but I would bet the ones I see around Madison have never left the tarmac and short of losing it on a curve, never will.
I also wonder if the military might be better off with APC's rather than Humvees in Iraq. I think they may leave our troops a tad to exposed. In any case, around here they are just feeding peoples ego's and I won't miss them.

I never really understood why GM tried to sell H1s in the first place to the public.

But they only had a diesel, no HP or top speed to speak of. And you couldn't get the 50 Cal machine gun mount on the civillian model. So no need for one!

So, yeah, point taken. I will point my
at the concept of the H2 and try to develop some pity for anyone not wealthy enough to keep feeding it who owns one.

If you were into off-roading, I would imagine a H2 would be the pinnacle ... the Ferrari for off-roaders.

are in much demand as pimpmobiles, I'll go with the latter.
So they will stop making the only real Hummer, the only one that is a true off road vehicle. Price did go up on it 40k in the past 5 years so I'd imaging that would slow sales. Guess I'll have to buy a surplus one, have a frame re-forged and bulid it up. Also BTW it was just about the safest vehicle for occupants on the road.

I would wait and see before jumping to any conclusions, especially since no news or talk of this has circulated around here.

Well they say they aren't going to do any layoffs or cut any jobs because of it. Other than that, it reminds me of the Ford GT, Porsche Carrera GT, Ferrari Enzo, etc...just another machine that was not at all practical, I rarely (if ever) saw in person, sold in limited numbers, and I couldn't ever have afforded one anyway so......RIP.

The H1, like the Mercedes G500, suffers from the 'price/capability ratio handicap'. The thing was built for amazing offroading abilities (it can essentially go wherever it can fit), but the price keeps most serious offroaders from being able to afford it, and the people who have one are often too afraid to beat on it the way it was designed. It also is priced so high that municipal emergency departments out in the boonies who might be able to benefit from it find they can buy three well equipped 'regular' 4x4s instead.
With people dumping/avoiding these vehicles, they might finally find their home with those limited-budget offroaders after all.

Carrera GT is $450K and they sold the same amount of these as H1s last year, maybe 450 or so
Ford GT is $150K, I saw one going home the other day. Awesome looking car.
And your right, no one losing a job, all production going to the military.

with only 399 built, I'm sure $1,000,000 is much closer to what you'd have to pay to get one, but it's not MSRP.

EDIT: MSRP, not current selling price. Oh well, the joke was good anyway.
