Smart Car: The one that got away (video)
My god.... I think I would want to shoot myself if I had to deal with traffic like that daily. Just the fear of people hitting my vehicle would kill me! (I've ridden through NYC in the back of my car, I was at the point where I needed to constanly look up, and not at the other vehicles!

The other day I anxiously watched a Smart weaving through heavy freeway traffic at 60 - 70 mph! I've been surprised at how many have appeared in San Francisco as soon as they became available -- already 3 in my immediate neighborhood.

Coming from Texas, it took a while to get used to NYC traffic, but now it's a blast as long there's wiggle room. Rush hour sucks. When traffic is much lighter, it is such a thrill to motor around the labyrinth of highways, bridges, and tunnels. Better graphics and background than any video game I've ever played.
I need to start compiling my night drives, but here is an earlier video I made of my routine grocery run as captured by my old suction-cup to the speedo camera set-up.

lacning, Great video and fully agree.
I grew up driving in Philly but now commute suburb-to-suburb in sedate central jersey. Many people take the train to NY but I always like to drive in - the north/south avenues, like 8th, are a blast - anything goes. Haven't had my mini there yet but your videos have me itching...

I drove a Checker Manhattan cab in NYC back in my college days. Other drivers always gave you a lot of room when you drove a Checker cab, because they knew you were capable of doing just about anything without any warning. I never disappointed them.
Hats off to you. That's some insane driving in NYC. But it seems very fluid, cars edging in/out of lanes, weaving, etc... its always interesting taking a cab there.
Nice video!

Thanks, I think I will stay away!!! I had many occasions to witness driving habits in Rome...that wasn't as scary as it was just plain weird....and oddly amusing from a spectator point-of-view. I learned my pedestrian skills there which I now use to intimidate the heck out of motorists in downtown Dallas.

A couple of months ago when I was motoring in downtown Manhattan I got behind a Smart car, blue with gray highlights, for a bit. Gave him the thumb's up when I passed, he waved. Such a cool little car. They have got to be a joy to park in the city.
I went into Manhattan today to attend the Big Apple Bar-Be-Que Block Party in Madison Square Park. I parked my MINI on 25th Street a half block west of Seventh Ave, at a 13-foot curb in between two driveways into a storage company. Sweet. No one could park in front or behind me. Best space ever.
I love motoring in the city. My wife and kids call me cabbie insane. But with the MINI's maneuverability, it's so much fun. Of course, I've driven thusly over the years in a '75 Fiat 128, '82 Sentra station wagon, '94 Volvo wagon (good handling) and in the past year my wife's BMW 328xi.

Hee hee on the burial rites for the FourTwo. And I'd thought the FourTwo meant you could get four Smart cars in the spaces two sedans take. I never thought of my MINI as big until I drove alongside that Smart in Manhattan. My wife's seen a couple in our area.
And the Smart cars can park face into the curb in Paris and other European cities whilst bigger cars parallel park, they don't jut out much, my co-worker who did a stint in the Reuters Paris bureau told me.
Cool second video you shared.
