Does anyone know if the state of Massachusetts allow Euro plates? Also is it a requirement to have both plates (front and back) on the car? Thanks!

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I do not know of a single state that allows one to display a license plate not issued by the state. Nor do I know of any state that allows one to display only one plate if two are issued.

That being said, I would not drill a hole in my front bumper until I had numerous tickets and was ordered to do so by a judge in court.

Thankfully, I live in a no-front-plate state

I can't answer the Euro plate question, but I do know that it is required to display front and rear plates if you were issued 2 plates at the RMV.

Apparently when they went to the current plate design they started issuing 2 plates. If you happen to have one of the old green & white plates from back when they only issued one plate, you can transfer that plate to your car and get away with only having to display one plate.

But if you just go to RMV and get brand new plates you will be issued two and you are required to display both of them.

I remember those "boring" green plates when I was attending undergrad in Cambridge, MA back in the 80's.

Unfortunately the bracket for the plate is on back order and they tell me it will be in next week. Here is my front license plate, so you know I have it in the car....." Of course the advantage of being an old geezer with a bald head, grey hair and kindly disposition, should get me out of any trouble....you young uns.....you're in deep do do........

The only state I know of that doesn't require 2 plates is Florida. There's a few others but they're just that, a few.

Delaware is one state that allows non-state-issued plates to be used. The catch is they have to be an older 5-digit number and the plate has to be a replica of a past DEL tag. You can buy old license tags to put on your car here. The old 4-digit, black & white, tags were made of porcelin and sell for up to $60,000 so there are companies that make replicas.

I saw a MINI here with an old style B&W euro plate on the back. Same colors as the old state tags but with a vanity name, Notre Dame logo and official state inspection tags. I dunno if he will get away with it or not, but cops here dont seem to care as long as the number is valid and the tags aren't expired.

I know this means squat to you in Mass, but that's my 2 cents.

pocketrocketowner, are you sure you aren't fibbing a little about being caught without a front plate in Alabama? Just curious since we have never had required front license plates (not counting the redneck pickups with confederate flag plates on front). Nonetheless, outside of my town, and especially in dry counties, I try to stay away from the long redneck arm of the law

I actually have very nice cops around my town. I even asked one if it was ok to have green bulbs in my turn signals. He told me that as long as I did not use blue or red bulbs that are reserved for emergency vehicles, that I could do as I pleased.

If you have the Mass plate with the green lettering you can display
any plate you want on front

I have a Mass plate with red lettering. I'm supposed to run them
both, but I run a Union Jack plate on the front

As long as you avoid Dunkin Donuts parking lots,
chances are you'll never see a cop anyway

If you do get bagged, I think it's 35.oo. No biggie

Maybe, maybe not. If you do get bagged, and are foolish enough to not be very polite to the cop AND to not have the second plate on your possession, you could be looking at getting impounded. You could fight that (i.e, the ticket and towing charge), and likely win, but you'd still be dealing with a major hassle. So, it's all a question of how lucky you're feeling.

Stay away from small towns at the beginning and end of the month (revenue-generating weeks for most local police depts), and you may be just fine

I live in Texas and have yet to understand why we have to have front plates.

The State trouper chasing you when you speed is always behind you and the camera when you run through a toll booth takes a photo of the back of the car,

so WHY do we have to put these ugly things on our cars ? ? ?

I have the Aero Kit and personalized plates,
so right now I have the front plate on -
but it's just so I can show off my personalized plate
and how good the car looks.

In the past I NEVER used the front plate on my cars.

Here in CT we're front plated by law. I've been carrying mine in the boot since i had invisaproduct applied 18 months ago. Never had a problem. The law is pretty much unenforced.

One reason why front plates are mandatory in some states is beacuse they offer a predictable, highly-reflective, perpendicular target for laser speed guns. This comes second-hand from a law enforcement "contact".

FWIW,

Theo

You're required by law to have plates on both front and back in MA. However, this is rarely enforced. I haven't had one permanently mounted in 6 years, and have never gotten so much as a mention from a police officer (even when being stopped for other things). BUT - you will need to have the front plate mounted when getting the car inspected every year. What I do is keep the plate in the boot most of the year, and just before going to get my inspection I hook the plate holder on front and use some short sections of wire to tie it to the lower grille temporarily. This is secure enough to pass inspection, and easy to remove again when I get out (and doesn't require drilling the front bumper). Another method is to just go ahead and screw the plate holder to the bumper, and get some color matched bumper plugs to fill the holes for the rest of the year.
