Just got my Mini, had the stereo upgraded to the nice one (8 speakers and all).

It sounds great but it just doens't get very loud. I can turn it up all the way, it's loud but not like, my GOD this is too loud. With nice weather and the windows down and the sunroof open you can't even make out the words.

Did I get a dud, or is anyone else having this problem. In short, is your stock stereo louder then you need?

sure you don't have any hearing loss? J/K!
search for the threads on the H/K 8 speaker system,
there are a bunch of tips on what the settings do to make it sound better.
if that isn't good enuf. you should replace it all!

make adjustments and see if that will work for you
If not roll up your windows and run the AC.

We just picked up our mini about a month ago and ordered the upgraded 8- speaker system too. When we were checking out the car and looking at all the options we chose we were only able to locate 6 speakers. Can you point out where the last two are (or are there only 6 speaker grills with additional speakers inside?) Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks, Bianca :???:

I took delivery on an MCS with upgraded H/K last week and am experiencing the same problem. Volume maxs out way too early and dial keeps spinning without any increase.

Yep, all HK's are like that.

I've had my MCS with HK since January, and I can crank it up to where it hurts my ears and I would worry about blowing out the speakers!
Either you have some adjustment completely off, or you have a defective unit!
Adjustments to check (see owners manual for details):
speed sensitive volume
front / rear balance (how this affects sound and volume depends on equalizer setting)
equalizer setting.

The HK system has 8 speakers:
2 dual voice coil speakers in the back that are either driven as (sub) woofers in some equalizer settings or as full-range on others..
2 low-mid speakers in the lower door panel.
The upper door panel units - as small as they seem - house TWO coaxial speakers each, a mid-high and a tweeter.

ToeKneeC67,
When I was working on silencing the buzz in my door panels recently, I had the windows open and was listening from just outside the car ... the sound was surprisingly NOT incredibly loud, on full volume.
Probably would be quite loud if I was inside, especially if the windows were shut. But when I upgrade to 4x100W, it will probably be louder

Bianca,

There are twin speakers (midrange & tweeter) behind the small top grille in each door. Check the
MB Quart speakers thread for pictures of all the speakers "naked"

hmm, there's a difference between loud and clear. a good system get's loud but stays clear, a bad system get's loud and muffled.

with my aftermarket system (100 watts per channel), i can go down the highway with the windows open and the sound stays clear and sounds pretty good actually.

Coming home yesterday in unusually nice weather (!) I had the windows down, doing 60-70.
Had the HK turned up to full volume (Phil Collins) and it was OK but not loud.

Later, after having switched the radio off for a while, I could not turn it up near to full volume without it being way too loud.

So I wonder if this is more behaviour related to DominicCooperS (?) comments about too much bass at speed, which clears if you switch off/on ... maybe the HK is programmed to "hold something back" for speed compensation, and does not do it correctly ...

I've noticed the ability to max out the gain is very source amplitude dependant. Playing some very dynamic CD's (like symphony), the head unit only allows "X" amount of gain, which is not nearly enough for adequate volume. However on typical modern "radio-style" recordings, where everything is normalized to just about 0dB, the same gain level on the head unit will just about rip your eardrums out. This is because the head unit has a max gain that is set too low to cover the variety of source material.
