Garmin. Specifically the ones I've seen mentioned most will basically be a warmed over Nuvi 360 or 660 (the latter being the one I own and use daily). It's an excellent unit with the best screen in the business.

If you don't want to wait just go buy the 660 now - beyond some small software tweaks it'll be identical to what's currently on the market.

It's worth noting that this was released last year in the UK: MINI UK Navigates Path to Garmin (MotoringFile)

But, if purchased via MINI the warranty would be longer than the standard 660 -

agree?

Gabe, can you fill me in ont his Mini portable nav? I'm actually looking into buying a portable nav, but if Mini plans on releasing their own then I'm going to have to wait for theirs.

You can see details on Garmin's Nuvi 660 web page.

here is an exerpt:
Navigate with Ease
nüvi 660 comes ready to go with preloaded maps and includes automatic routing, 3D or 2D map perspective, turn-by-turn voice directions that speak street names and a fingertip touch screen interface, making navigation easy. It also supports configurable vehicle icons — fun, customized car-shaped icons in a variety of colors that show your position on the map.
See More with a Widescreen Display
nüvi 660 features a super-bright 4.3" widescreen display for improved map viewing, POI lookup and MP3/audio book playback. This landscape display has white backlight and a touchscreen for easy use.
Avoid Traffic Tie-Ups
Steer clear of traffic with nuvi 660's integrated FM TMC traffic receiver. Receive alerts about traffic tie-ups and road construction that lie ahead on your route. Next, simply touch nuvi's screen to view traffic details or detour around the problem area.
Enjoy Wireless FM Audio Transmission
With nüvi 660's wireless FM transmitter* you can hear audio, including voice prompts, MP3s and audio books, through your vehicle's stereo.
Go Beyond Navigation
Navigation is just the beginning. nüvi 660 includes many “must have” entertainment and travel tools including MP3 player, audio book player from Audible.com, JPEG picture viewer, currency converters, and more.
Optional software for language translation, detailed travel guide and Saver's Guide allow you to customize your nüvi for your travel needs.

* FM Transmitter feature is only available in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Garmin part number: 010-00540-00
Suggested Retail Price:
$964.27 U.S.D. (for domestic US market only)

Does anyone know if the Mini-Garmen gets 'wired' in to the cars audio system (like the MINI Nav.) or is it a stand alone unit?

It's a standalone unit identical to the Garmin except it has a tiny "MINI" written on the lower left.

A photo and description is in the current MINI Motoring Accessories/MotoringGear brochure called “The Fully Authorized, Utterly Definitive & Largely Unabridged Motorer’s Guide to the You-niverse” on pages 24-25:

You can read about it at MotoringFun.com.

The Garmin in that picture is the Nuvi 360, not the wider 660. Can't wait until the custom MINI icons start hitting the forums - just wish there were a convertible version. My wife has the Nuvi 350 in her MINI, and I have a 660 in mine, and I'd love to customize the units to our cars.

Well - the custom icon is easily retrievable (it is in the Garmin/vehicle subdirectory and it should be a 1.2 MB SRF file). Now all we should find is someone who bought the addon (it is in fact a rebadged nuvi 350/360 not the wider screen 6xx). Nevertheless - all the nuvi will accept those srf files.

Looking for a "donor" too,

MMM

Hopefully, as MINI expands the configuration choices for the on-screen car icons, they'll make them available through their website.

I sincerely doubt it

However - I downloaded from the MINI International web site (that is richer in downloadables) a splash screen for the nuvi. Cropped it at 480 x 272 and it looks quite nice when booting the nuvi (a process that might take longer than expected...).

I doubt that they will make available the SRV for nuvi, though. They do charge 750$ for a nuvi 3xx (that runs in the mid-400 now on Amazon). There would be absolutely no incentive for them to do so.

Thus - the one that will ultimately "provide" the SRF file(s) will he our hero forever. And will he hunted by the MINI legal department also forever...

MINI provides the bootup screen for the NUVI on the UK MINI site, though perhaps un-intentionally. From what I can tell, the only reason to buy the NUVI from MINI vs. online is to get the MINI car icons and/or the custom mounting bracket. I love my NUVI and it's function is fantastic in the new MINI. Basically, it comes with a bracket that sticks on to the giant speedometer, and connections for a microphone and aux sound. I run the sound output into the MINI's aux port, getting ready to test the microphone feature so I can use the bluetooth handsfree feature. Fun, fun, fun. I second the motion for someone to please post the MINI car icon files. Also check www.nuvipassion.com where people are anxiously waiting for these as well.

Well, here is some reasonably exciting news. While these aren't MINI icons, they are Smarts!! Proof of concept, the icons look just like little Smart cars. The web site http://techmods.net/nuvi/ has a good explanation of how to make the icons, along with some samples.
