Are the DIP switches on the DICE module set to OFF?

Tom,

Are there any pictures that illustrate setp by step the DIY installation? I looked at http://support.diceelectronics.com/ but I don't find any Mini Cooper's installations

Thanks!

Finding a HU able to display text?

Hi-

These long threads can be a real pain. Seventeen pages, and "sv" or "sw" is too short a string to search on!

I have an Oct. '04-build 2005-model year MCS. I gather that even though my HU plays MP3 discs, it's too early to display text from the DICE unit. Right?

So I'm thinking of trying to find a later HU in a salvage yard or on eBay or something to replace mine. If I'm looking at a unit that's been removed from a car, how can I tell if it's late enough? On the HU, there's a sticker with lots of info, including a "Manufactured Date" and "SW/NO" (software number?) and "HW/NO" (hardware number?). What am I looking for?

Also, if I'm looking at a unit in a car, is there some VIN number (last x digits) that is known to be where the HU's became text-capable?

Thanks!

VIN number will not help, you will want a SV50 or higher. We do have text capable radios on the site:

Thanks, Tom. Is the "SV50" you speak of the same thing as the "SW/NO" on the sticker?

Is there some way of checking this without pulling the radio?

Thanks again!

yes, just follow these instructions:

From my buddy Murray
One very important note is that your head unit MUST be one manufactured after Jan 2005 or it will NOT display text. To check the date. Turn the ignition on, then turn the radio off, turn the radio back on and now hold the ‘M’ button down for about 10 – 12 sec. The radio will display its serial number, now use the far right button marked ”-” on the radio and the next number displayed is the firmware XX YR XX. The middle pair of numbers is the year. That YR reference needs to say 05 or 06 in order to display the text you desire.

Best Regards-
Randy

Thanks for the help. I'm still a little confused about how the quotes above refer to each other. Does Tom's comment:

Should actually start with SV, the last 2 numbers needs to be 50 or higher.

...mean I should see "SV" as the first two characters of "XX YR XX" (in other words, "SV YR XX")? And that the final XX pair should be 50 or greater?

Also, I'm still not clear on whether the "SV" number is the same as the "SW/NO" on the sticker.

Yes - they were set to OFF.

Just for the heck of it I switched them to ON and the iPhone works great now. I don't have text on the HU but that's no big deal as I just bought what I need to mount the iPhone right next to the HU so it is easily seen and controled. I'll keep using it like that.

Thanks again for a great product.

Turn the switches back to OFF, we do not use them in MINI applications.

If you want to browse the iPod commands of the iPhone while connected, perform the following steps:

1. Connect iPhone
2. When iPhone asks to go into accessory mode, press NO or wait for several seconds
3. Press the HOME button for +7 seconds
4. Navigate through phone like normal.

One caveat, you will not have proper text display or steering wheel/radio control in this mode. To return to normal, disconnect/reconnect the iPod.

Maybe the third time will be the charm:

Is the "SV" number displayed on the readout the same as the "SW/NO" on the sticker on the radio?

Thanks!

Turn them back to off? But it's working great now! I have full iPhone function from the moment I plug it in and the steering wheel controls allow me to skip forward and back tracks (and volume, of course). Just no text display, but as I said before I just bought a mount from you guys and when it comes I'll be able to see the phone easily - so no text on the HU is needed.

Will it hurt anything to leave them on? The idea of having to hold the HOME button for seven seconds every time I plug in the phone is not at all appealing...

Leaving them ON will not hurt anything - just limit functions.

Great - thanks! Thanks for the quick responses on the forum here as well. That's the main reason I went with you in purchasing.

Most times yes, sometimes it will not match. Its always best to get the SV from the setup screen.

Sounds like you must have hit the 5th (preset) button on the headunit then the > button and accidentally selected the DICE AUX input. Turn the headunit on and press the #5 preset button. Then press the left select or < button to go back to the iPod input and you should be fine.

Fuego's correct, you are in AUX mode. Press CD5/TRACK1, then return to CD1 to return to iPod mode.

OK, I have my DICE unit installed and it's patched through using the OEM iPod cable. I want to remove the OEM cable and put the wires back to stock. Tom told me I need a pin removal tool to remove the wires from the OEM harness. I have called a couple of electronics stores and they have several types of pin removal tools. Anyone know which type I need and where I can get one?

Digikey or Mouser have a few flat-bladed pin removal tools, bringing the connector to a local electronics shop should do the trick.

Hi Tom,

I just installed my Dice HU version. Everything seems to work fine, except when I press 1-4 to select the diferent browsing modes it displays CD CHECK, then a number for a several seconds then the song info. Is it supposed to display the playlist name?

Is this normal?
Thanks!

Playlist text is not supported with the Dice.

Tom of eas has a post somewhere on this forum on how to put voice tags via a AT&T text to speech page in your ipod. So when you're browsing through your playlists, it announces what playlist you've selected.
