Stereo works... but no sound?

I've had my MCS w/ HK stereo for just over three months. Love it, love it, loveit, but I think we had our first growing pains today. As we got into the car to drive home after Christmas dinner, the stereo was on and happily clicking through tracks...but with absolutely no sound! We tried re-starting the car, removing CD/iPod, and resetting everything we could think of, all to no avail.

I am, of course, going to call the dealer as soon as they open after their Christmas holidays, but in the meantime I'm quite curious. Has this happened to anyone else?!? Any idea as to what might be causing it? (We thought perhaps a disconnected amp wire, but if that was indeed the case wouldn't we still hear something coming through the speakers at very low volume? An ear placed right up against speaker hears absolutely nothing.)

The iPod interface just plugs into the CD changer input in the back of the head unit - I don't see how a messed-up iPod adapter would take the rest of the stereo down with it. Sounds like the in-deck CD player isn't working either, and I'm assuming you tried the radio as well with no luck.

It's probably a bad pre-amp output in the headunit, a disconnect in the wiring between the head unit and the h/k amplifier, or a fault in the amplifier itself. In each of those cases, you'd likely get nothing at all from the speakers, rather than simply an attenuated output, so that matches your symptoms.

Sounds like a dead HK amp to me.

If the pre amps in the HU go, you usually still have noise from the speakers simply because the amp is on, but its not getting as signal.

From what I have read the HK units are known to do this. My HK amp did the same thing for me once. After a while of shutting hte system off it came back and has not done it in a couple of months. I am hoping it actually starts doing it regularly so i can get the dealer to take care of it before my warranty is up.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Took it into the dealer on the 27th and, sure enough, it's a dead amp. (Unlike a few other cases I've seen on NAM, and as happened to k_h_d above, the sound never came back, just stayed off.) They've ordered me a new one, and I'm going back in in a few days to get it installed.

After only three months of ownership, I'm hoping it doesn't decide to do this again once we're out of the warranty period...

Thanks again!

So as it turns out....

After my dealership ordered the new amp, waited for it, and then tried to install it, I got a call in which they told me, "We're still having some trouble with it."

Turns out, after a day and a half of trouble-shooting, it wasn't the amp at all but a faulty wire/routing in the wiring harness. Huh.

Anyway, just thought I'd post this for posterity's sake, in case anyone finds himself in this situation in the future. Happy motoring! (And music-listening!)

Question: Were you using the AUX input of the Ipod adaptor. I had three of the AUX inputs go bad within about 2 months. Switched over to the Ipod adaptor no more issues. Recently changed to the blitzsafe and xm radion and ipod adaptor from blitzsafe.....Very happy with the setup.
