Sony headunit & iPod interface little review

Hi motorers!

I recently got a new headunit and iPod interface for my MINI.

Pics:

(The iPod wire on the little box is long enough to install the module under the headunit, and run the wire to the glovebox or the Euro parcel tray, and still have 2-3 feet loose)

I used to have the MINI iPod interface and always thought it lacked some flexibility. You can only control a few things and need to create MINI playlists in order to get your songs.

My stock headunit died 3 days ago and I decided to get a Sony headunit and iPod interface. (CDX-GT300 headunit and XA-110IP iPod interface)

First, the installation is pretty much straight forward. I downloaded the wiring diagram from a quick search on NAM and connected the headunit easily. The iPod interface has 3 wires : A BUS wire, a RCA and the iPod connector)

The headunit itself has plenty of great features that makes the sound a lot better. It plays MP3/WMA cd, auxiliary front input, and many other cool features... There's a feature that will increase the sound quality from digital medias, such as MP3 cd and iPod. It really does work great!!

Sony's iPod interface is a lot better than MINI's model. It can scroll through the artists, albums and playlists. It shows the artist, song title, album and playlist. The headunit has 2 extra buttons to scroll easily through the artists/albums/playlists. No need to create new playlist to get them to work with the interface... It reads everything on your iPod.

The headunit costs 120$ and the interface is 50$. The faceplate is 20$ and the antenna adaptor is 4$. Make sure to get the "European universal" adaptor. It will fit!

Bottom line : I am very pleased with Sony's iPod interface & headunit. Sound quality is a lot better, iPod features are all there, and it can be installed very easily!

My rating : / (5/5 lol)

When you move from track to track on the iPod, how quickly is the Artist and Title information displayed on the Sony headunit? How quickly can you move through the playlist information via the display on the headunit?

Thanks-
Randy

Very quickly...

The iPod interface is really nice and much more developed than what MINI has to offer.

You can scroll through artists/albums/playlist, and shuffle a prticular artist/album/playlist or all the songs.

It's really worth it!

It also charges the iPod when the headunit is powered on.

Steering Wheel Controls

After instaling the Sont head unit, do your steering wheel controls still work? Can you control the iPod with the steering wheel buttons?

Unfortunately, the MFSW does not work with Sony headunits...

It's not a big deal for me... I would have like to get it to work, but the extra fexlibility Sony's iPod interface adds worths it!

The MFSW can work with Sony headunits if you have the MFSW adaptor: http://www.newministuff.com/mfsw_adaptor_guide.htm

Course, mind you, it only works with particular models, but it's certainly better than nothing.

That just opened a world of possibilities, now off to see if it fits the head unit from my last car, and check that with iPod adaptor capability so someday if I get an iPod for my music collection (which could easily fill the big one) I could have it all work seemlessly.

Thanks for the info!

I sent an email to them to know if they make an adaptor for my Sony headunit!

Just received an update from Mike @ NewMINIStuff

Their adaptor works with my headunit!! Woohoo!!!

So if anyone wants a complete alternative to the MINI iPod interface & headunit, the Sony CDX-GT300 is a great choice!! The iPod interface is 50$ and provides a lot more flexibility than MINI has to offer!!

Plus, you have a much better sound and more audio options!

Does the text on the Sony screen scroll, or is there a character limit?

On a Sony unit I have from summer of 04 it scrolls (there is a limit for some things with really long names, but it is about 2x to 3x the amount that are displayed.

Glad to hear many of you with different headunits not listed on the website can still receive MFSW functionality. I know for a fact the MFSW is probably one of the best options available for the MINI. It's probably one of the few options on my car that I use on a daily basis!
