I'm kind of OCD about my iPhone mount. I want the top of the phone just about flush with the top of the dash, within easy reach, with easy connections to power and audio. Here's the first iteration in my '06 R50:
I used a plastic compound called Instamorph, which is moldable at 140°F and sets up rigid when it cools, to tweak a suction cup mount. To give the suction cup something to stick to, I mounted the metal bottom of a Pringles can on the dash with Plasti-Tak (adhesive putty) so it's removable without messing up the dash panel.
Here is the start of my Android interface. Hope this allowed even though it isn't an iPod.
Still needs some skim coats of mud, fine sanding and a final finish coat of dye to match the rest of the dash.
Thanks for the ideas! Late to the party but here is my contribution.
my sons’ r53 came with the typical pre broken MINI accessory cup holder, so I used the broken off base of it, and a $10 at Walmart pop socket / magnetic vent mount and made my own custom “it could have been a dealer option” looking mount. Comes with two plates, one for the iPod, one for his phone.
break off/ remove the vent mount clamp part leaving just the ball stud, drill a hole, carefully thread the ball stud in using it to tap the hole, then grind down the original wing nut to fit inside and put it in to spread the load, back fill with expanding gorilla glue.
total cost $10 and some 15 minutes or so making it, and overnight waiting for gorilla glue to set.
iPod mount.
