Is Blitzsafe the only solution...

...to putting an AUX port in an 'O2 (MINI/AUX DMX V.1)? I just think $100 is a lot of money. I want to hook my Roady2 up direct without modulation.

well, you can get an FM a/v input modulator like this... specialty install shops sometimes have it at their store. they're usually $25-45.

Actually, XM makes a similar thing (just found out). I wonder how the quality is compared to the Blitzsafe. Do you know if it is easy to get to the antenna behind the radio?

You can add an AUX input that connects to the stock radio for under $30. It is a cable that is added to a connector in the back of the radio. It is from MINI and can be picked up at the dealership. It will activate the AUX setting in the radio and you control the volume with the radio's volume. The cable ends with a receiving end for an earplugs type of connector. Plug your MP3 player, cell phone, radar detector or any audio source. I have. Place it in the Euro tray for convenience, not the glove box.

I hope it helps. Lots of threads on this are no more. Weird, I feel like my '03 is phasing out.

bomboasy- it doesn't work on the 02's HU.

jtpryan- I haven't pulled out the HU so not completely sure, but looking at the various how-to's im sure it's not that hard to do. You can pull the 12v from the cigarette lighter too if you plan on placing the aux jack below the
switchbox.

They say it will, for $200. Thanks anyway though.

I think I'm gonna go the FM Modulation route, the one that goes in-line with the antenna. Anybody know how hard it is to get to the antenna cable behind the head unit?

I think you're going to have to remove the HU from the car to get to
the antenna port. Atleast, I could not see the antenna cord while
I was doing the auxjack install the other evening.

I think there were instruction on mini2.com on how to remove the HU.

or you can do one of these cheepo RF modulated MP3 player adapters
you can buy at Walmart for like $25. Im thinking about
getting one for my pos Civic im leasing. My wife has a couple of flash
cards she doesn't use any more so I'll just plug that into the socket
as below and listen. It also has the 3.5mm headphone jack where you
can just plug your MP3 player into.

how's a target version? You still need a separate MP3 player for this one
as well.

You probably won't be happy with the sound quality of FM modulation. I had an 02 with the Blitzsafe and it was well worth $100 for the quality!

really? because MP3 is not that high resolution anyway... I think FM
would be more than enough for listening inside a car especially if you're
on a budget. It will sound just as good as your FM reception given that
you bought a decent MP3 player with decent D/A converters.

I don't know the details of the FM modulators (have not bothered reading the links) but note that the MINI antenna connection into the back of the head unit is not a standard connector.
If you replace the MINI HU with aftermarket, one of the things you need is a converter from the MINI antenna wire to a standard one - so I imagine if you want to connect an antenna modulator, you might need a converter going the other way?

Not sure why they plug to the antenna anyway - don't they just transmit "around" and get picked up by the antenna?

How about buying a used 03-05 Head Unit

Then you have all the bells and whistles to add all the cool nifty Sat and Aux features - my buddy on here owns an 02 and managed to pick up an 03 headunit on ebay for $100.

So I went to Walmart looking for that cigarette lighter plug with MP3
decoder, but they didn't have it in-stock.

I bought the Belkin programmable FM modulator with auto on/off
as below. I can program up to 4 different FM channels, has a backlight
display and comes with a cigarette lighter adapter. basically, all-in-one
kit. Chicagoland has very limited open channels so did not want to
risk the pre-set one that went for about $20. I was able to get
2 clean channels and 2 soso clean channels programmed on my
Belkin and on my Civic's radio.

I played my Creative ZEN MP3 player over the FM waves and actually
I was pretty impressed by the pretty decent sound and reception.

Since the Belkin has auto on/off and can power off of 2 AAA's (that is
included in the package) it is very convenient. I paid about $35.
If you use the cigarette lighter adapter the auto on/off is defeated,
but will turn on/off with your ignition (given that your car's cigarette
lighter is switched).

Direct wireup has much stronger signal than using RF like the Belkin I bought.
The reason why I bought the Belkin was because I wanted to try it out just
for kicks, and wanted the portability to use on not only my Civic, but on
any car (or boat) with a FM radio.

I did a back to back comparison vs the Belkin and factory Auxjack input
on my MCS. The high frequency & definition is considerably lost, but for
the price and convenience it does the job for the most part.

Solution...

I also have an 02 without the aux input and bought an adapter from Mikey the mini aka http://newministuff.comthis adapter is for connecting the loose wires in the rear of the car that go to the disc changer (which i do not have or want) allowing an RCA output to connect your roady to. I used for my skyfi for a few months then found an 03 headunit on this board and went the xm radio route with a commander and blitzsafe unit. I dont use this unit anymore if you want it I would be willing to sell it for $45 shipping included. I think I paid over 40 english pounds for it. Also if you want to hardwire the kit to your stereo Mikey also has power connectors that simply plug into the back of our stereos that give you power for whatever you wish to connect (with many different connectors that range from bare +/- wires to cigarette lighter connectors). Check him out...another great resource is http://myradiostore.com for connectors etc. check out the forum link for great how to info. I have a few other connectors and misc. items for mounting skifi and or roadys so pm me if you have any questions.
