Nav System Map Updates

I have a new Mini Coupe 2015 with Mini Connected and Navigation. I have updated my Mini Connected with USB http://www.mini.com/connectivity/sof...ate/intro.html

But was wondering does anyone know how maps or Nav system get updated? Dealer? Or something as simple as buying a map and uploading it with USB? I had a 2007 Mini Cooper and it was buy the new DVD for newest maps. Guessing it is something along those lines.

Oh, also, my Nav System Help says:

Wow.

I just looked it up for my 2006 MINI, and it said that the 2015 map will be the FINAL version. There will be NO further updates for my Nav system.

Edit: I dug around a bit more. The website shows all DVD based maps (up to model year 2010) will no longer be updated. In 2011, MINI switched to a flash drive system with maps updated through USB. But I wonder how long they will support that?

Let this be a cautionary tale about getting a factory Nav system. Hopefully Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will become popular and make proprietary systems obsolete.

BludyL, Yours is a USB version map and there is a 2015 update available. I just updated both my cars. The map is sold on a USB stick and can be used in other cars but you have to buy an enabling code to unlock a specific vehicle to allow updated maps to be installed. You will find a USB plug inside glove box designed for this purpose.
Plug in USB stick, acknowledge update, enter 20 digit code and start driving. It will load while driving, even short trips as long as USB stick is plugged in. Instructions come with USB map stick.
Hope this info helps.

How in gods name do these dealers justify $150 for a map update on a USB stick!?!? I have the NAV system in my 2013 R55 and it's terrible!!! I like to use it and Wave at the same time and the MINI nav will attempt to take you in the most bizarre out of the way routes, and yes I have checked settings for fastest/shortest route settings. All in all I have found the whole NAV connected system to be a HUGE waste of money and MINI should be paying us to update and continue to use! lol Aside from that LOVE my Clubbie!!!

So it's a simple process to update it?

Yes. Updating is just plugging in the usb drive and letting it download and then update. Warning, it does take a while to download but it resumes when you shutdown/power off car and get back in. I kept the thumbdrive plugged into glovebox usb port until it finished, you can check progress in Navigation and then options area.

The data no longer fits on a single DVD. It went from one to two discs about 5 years ago.
