Sound Dampening 07 MCS

Pictures to come shortly. As I am in the middle of a simple audio upgrade or what I consider simple 1-10 polk DB subwoofer and Kicker KS 6.2 component set with Kicker Impulse 654xi amp, I decided was good time to apply sound dampening material aka dynamat. I recently did some research and found many forums about alternatives to Dynamat. I had already had 4 12 x 36 sheets of dynamat xtreme left over from old project. Looking for a cheaper method found a rubberized roof flashing at big box hardware store initials HD for 16.97 a roll that is 6" x 25'. I found its about the same thickness as original dynamat. Since I had entire rear interior panels removed and as all you mini owners out there probaly have noticed there is quite abit of rattle from our Mini's so I took the oppurtunity to over due the initial project. So far I have done the entire cargo area behind the 6x9 speakers both B-pillars and under rear seat area. If doing dampening for audio I recommend either the dynamat or other name product due to thickness @70-80 mils. For general nroad noise reduction or cost the roofing Material some sites call it Peel N Seel the stuff I had was different name but noticeable improvement in rattle reduction as I drove around still minus rear interior.

Good thing you don't live in texas... as it gets very hot here and asphalt based products will not hold up over time and they will stink also ( i speak here from experience with peel n seal)... IMO Butyl based products are better for longevity.

Post up some pics when you are finished and let us know the results.

Peel n seel

I'm gonna do pix tomorrow I'm thinking of getting Fatmat to fimsh project based on the fact that I need about 25-30 sq. feet to get the results in P n S its gonna take 4 rolls or more that is defeating the cost reduction idea. Its about alf as thick as DM xtreme. Have you done any dampening to your Mini?

I don't own a MINI... YET... But when I get one you bet sir I will do a full dampening of it and add mass loaded vinyl and closed cell foam on top of the second skin or CLD tiles I plan on using.

I'm gonna see how it sounds after I put the panels back in. There is a great thread in this topic about panel removal. It helped me tremendously. I have to do the rear yet but that can wait till audio equipment is in. I have freind coming in Sunday to help and start planning major upgrades.

Those Polk DB subs are pretty tough! A buddy of mine has the loaded enclosure with the 2 12's I unhooked one snaked the wire through the vent and ran each to it's own JL / 500.1 V1(they are rated @ 300w), heated them up plenty of times enough for the glue on the coils to start smelling and smoking (always let them cool off when this happens) after i gave them a 10-20 min cool down they were back in action ready to go again... Nice Old School Kicker amp btw

the DB isn't the new model. The one I have is from 1996 1998 era. I only had one with a logo the other 8 I have are prototype/test speakers a friend of mine gave me. I have an old set of 6.5 components also but I think he gave me a house speaker so I bought the Kicker KS. that and the 6 inch fits better than 6.5

The 2 RF amps I miss the most are my Power 800@2 and My T1k . Too bad Never got to try out BD Sync. The T1k clamped 1100w @ 2.83ohms @ 13.4v and the Power 800@2 clamped 1320 @ 2ohms @ 14.2v and it was never intended to go below 4ohms bridged unless it was overbuilt and RF never said anything about it... Both were hooked to a DD9512g D4.

Open the impulse up and check all the caps as they might be leaking also check the fets...
For the DB if the surround isnt foam and is still intact get some CA. Glue on it and all should be well.

I swapped the db out already , but I will definately check on the Impulse. If anything I'll sell it and get some money back. Back on the deadening note Im gonna try Fat Mat to finish off the project. The peel n seel really is no savings when I can get 25 sqft of fat mat for 44.95 it would take 4 rolls of PNS to equate to same stuff. Plus the wider sheets make life easier.
