Mini and Apple...what a dissapointment!
I have a '08 MCS w/o Mini Connect and an iPhone 4. First problem is that when I try to use the phone when paired, the caller is clear, but they hear nothing but a garbled mess. I've updated my iPhone software and it didn't help:-(
Second problem...then I use the proper y cable, the music is all distorted. Sounds fine using the same USB plug with a thumb drive, but with iPhone...complete crap. Just tried a iPod Shuffle and it sounds fine...so I guess the music problem is my iPhone?
Anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate it! I thought Mini and Apple were supposed to go together like chocolate and peanut butter:-(

I am not an expert, but I think the Bluetooth and USB/Line-In are all shared in or around the stereo head-unit. I have Bluetooth, USB/Line-In without MINI-Connected and an iPhone4 (IOS5) with no issues.
Is your car out of warranty?
Do you have a friend where you can test another iPhone4 and maybe an iPod? Also try to pair the Bluetooth with someone else's phone. Do you have access to someone else's MINI USB cable? This way you can isolate the issue down to your phone, cable, or car electronics...
My guess is the phone and cable are fine.

The Mini is still under warranty, but the dealer is 75 miles from here:-( I've tried another cable and still had the problem with the music. I have IOS 5.1 on mine now..but 5.0 did it too. Haven't tried another iPhone though. This phone does work perfectly with my BMW X3 though...maybe it is the car. What part would be bad though? I did run across this gor the Bluetooth problem: http://www.theapplepress.com/2010/08...exposed-video/
Sounds to me like the phone and cable are probably OK and you need the dealership to troubleshoot. I would still try another phone with Bluetooth to test.
There are several parts... no idea where you would start:

It could be a lot of things but it should work fine.
Mini recognizes the iphone differently than an ipod or USB stick and routes the i/o differently as it needs to get the control code to operate the phone and take calls.
It could be that your Mini's entertainment software needs to be updated to work with ios 5. Or it could be that the entertainment systems electronics are bad in the iphone i/o circuit. Either way try using another iphone and/or cable, if it doesn't still doesn't work then your dealer will need to troubleshoot the issue.

Here' an update...for the sound quality with music, I realized that the input level want too high. I bought this car used, and I guess it was set that way when I bought it. I adjusted and music sounds great!
On the bluetooth problem: It's apparently intermittent. When I adjusted the level input I thought I'd see if there was a remote chance that this cleared up the problem with no one being able to understand what I'm saying while on the phone. For a few days, it seemed like it fixed it, but now back to the same problem
I have an appointment with the dealer, but it's 75 miles away, and I'd hate to get there and have it not be the car at all.

I have the iPhone 4s and it works via bt on my 2010 R57. But, I will say that Mini's support for bluetooth in general is pathetic. For a car marketed to the plugged in under 50 crowd, mini has not lived up to their implied commitment. I should be able to stream music (itunes or pandora) via bt, but alas, they pieced the software together with the same ineptitude and disdain for their customers as their $3 speakers.
Been on vacation so This is the first i am seeing of this thread. But some things i can say.
The iPhone has Bluetooth volume adjustments and so does the MINI and if not adjsuted properly you will have the problems you are mentioning.
i ma not sure how to adjust the iPhone bluetooth volumes but there is one for microphone level and voice out levels. Set both of these to mid range.
As for the MINI the ONLY way to adjsut the bluetooth volumes is to do it as follows.
1. for incoming voice - have someone call you and have them repeat a sentence to you over and over maybe 4 times while they are speaking adjust the volume control for the radio.
2. for outgoing voice - Call someone and repeat to them the same sentence over and over while adjusting the volume control for the radio have them tell you when the voice sounds clear.
If you have any other questions about this PM me or ask the question here.

Just when out and tried it. If I turn the radio volume **** down, I can hear the caller and my voice is still all staticy. I can hear the person fine if the radio volume is up loud enough. I can't fined a bluetooth volume on the iPhone 4...I googled it and couldn't find anything either. I thought maybe if I adjusted the volume on the phone while using the bluetooth, that would work, but the phone volume buttons don't do anything:-(
OK...today I was thinking...for some reason I couldn't turn down the bluetooth output on my phone while connected to the mini...but what if I connected with my jawbone and turned it down, then reconnected to the mini. So far it works! I'm hesitant to get too excited because the problem seems to be intermittent but we will see! Wish me luck!

Not sure if any of this will help you.
From about 5 minutes of google search it seems that Apple removed "easy" bluetooth volume control on the 4. it was easy on the 3 and 3gs where you just used the volume controls while in a bluetooth call.
It also seems that the problem can carry over as updates are made to the phone OS via standard upgrades. But if a complete wipe and reinstall of the OS is done then the bluetooth volume adjust seems to come back.
One suggestion that I saw was to adjust the volume on the phone to a midrange point "before" connection (not pairing) to the bluetooh device. I.E. this had to be done each time before the iPhone connected to the bluetooth device (ear piece, car, other adpters etc). There were a number of people that reported this worked will with ear pieces and cars with built in bluetooth.
My gut feeling is that this is more a problem with your phone than with the car. I have seen many cars with problems with iPhones and other phones from LG. most (but not all) of the time when the phone was changed out to another phone (different iPhone model or not an LG) the problems went away.
Good luck with finding out what it really is.

Thanks Schatz. I'd just about given up on the iPhone Mini combo. Mine works - sometimes and not at other times. I find that if I get into the car with the iPhone 4 in my pocket and start the car, everything pairs perfectly, but if the car is running and I get in with the iPhone, nothing pairs, e.g., if I leave my wife in the car with things running (like A/C) while I run into a store, when I come back, the phone is no longer paired and will not pair until I turn the car off, and turn it back on again.
My wife's android phone works fine all the time. Its only the iPhone 4 that seems to have the problem. There was a new software "fix" for the iPhone a few days ago, but it seems to have not changed anything with the Mini.
It could be worse -- think what would happen if Apple AND Mini got to gether to make a car. The "Stock Problems" forum would bring down the internet.

OK...Talked to Apple this morning, and told them my problem. They swapped out the phone...and I still have the same problem!

So Dealer says it the phone, and Apple replaced phone.

Just because Apple replaced the Hardware of the phone, I.E. they gave you a new one does not in anyway mean that the firmware (operating system software that runs the hardware) is correct. Apple does not follow the real Bluetooth Standard so that is where the problem lies. Older versions of the iPhone firmware where better than new ones. It may take doing a hands on replacement of the firmware (operating system of the phone) to get it to play nicely with the MINI.
