2004 MINI iPod compatibility chart

Hi,

I'm a new MINI owner (a very proud one) and I 'found' the ipod adapter in the glove compartment. It's a white cord, looks OEM and it's not the 3.5mm but the wide apple connector.

I know it's not compatible with the iphone 3, but I wonder what's the latest ipod it would be compatible with.
I can't find any information on that.

Would iPod nano 4th gen work? I would hate to buy the thing and find out it's not compatible.

Thank you for your help!!!

t.

Borrow one from a friend and test it first. If it's an Apple connector an iPhone will usually work just as well. Just use the iPod app. As for which source on the radio it uses, that you'll have to find out. CD or Aux usually.

I think the 4th gen nano was the last one with FireWire power, which is the limiting factor. You can always make the adapter compatible with a power converter, like this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...s&tag=appleink

I've using that with a 3rd gen iPod touch.

I figured I'd have to ask my friends and figure it out. iPhone didn't work when i tired yesterday, although the connector fits. I'll try it again later.

Soo,

I tried yesterday an iPod Nano 2nd gen, it worked.
I tried the new iPad (selecting ipod app) it worked.
I tried the current nano 6th gen (?) it worked.

What I am yet not sure about is if it will charge. 2nd gen gets enough charge from this. hopefully 5th gen will too!

I bought a 5th gen ipod on ebay yesterday. I hope it will work ;-)

Hope the info helps somebody.

Did you get the ipod adapter manual with the car? You know in order to select songs from the head unit you need to put the songs in playlists titled MINI1, MINI2, etc up to MINI5. These correspond to the buttons 1 through 5 on the radio. The 6th button is for all the music on your ipod, and it has a random function.

Okay, a little update.

I got the iPhone to work, although it's not as easy. Requires some patience, but once it works, it's all good. The iPhone does not charge thru the connector.

Same with iPod 5th generation. Naming playlists MINI1, MINI2 etc worked like a charm, but 5th gen iPod does NOT get charged thru it either :( 2nd gen that i tested, charged.

Over the years, Apple changed the connector interface and MINI also updated their adapter to be compatible. Which iPod/iPhone models work or charge will depend on the adapter version that was installed in the car.

early MINI iPod adapter

I had the first generation iPod adapter installed in my 2003 MCS and it worked fine with iPods that were current then and the first iPhone. When I got an iPhone 3GS Apple had changed the dock connector to charge from firewire to USB, so I had to get an adapter for it to work with the steering wheel controls and to charge.

The first one I got was from Griffin but it broke after awhile so I replaced it with this model from Scosche and it works fine:
