Where is 3/4 volume?

Hi Everyone,

Just trying to set up my new amplifier properly and I need to know where 3/4 volume is or the volume level just before you get distortion from the speakers.

It is a clubman with the base stereo system.

I need to know how many "clicks" of the volume **** will get me to the sweet spot (approx 3/4 volume just before distortion.) I can't do it as my speakers are no longer connected!

Thanks for your help.

Not sure about the 09 base system but on the 07 and 08 systems some of them had a preset volume. It depends on the software revision in the radio.

If there is a preset volume then after the car has been turned off for more than 30 minutes (60 if you have bluetooth) then the car will revert back to that level I.E. not stay at 3/4 volume.

This can be changed thru the radio service menu. Off the top of my head i do not remember what sequence of buttons it is to get into the radio service menu but it you search the Audio and NAV section you should be able to find it.

Searching "Radio Service menu" didnt work so well but schatzy's answer on PTY seems to tell ya how to get in.

Thanks for all the info.

Is there a way to futher turn down the "gong" lower than the -5 in the settings. Can this be done in the "radio service menu"?

Since I have installed an aftermarket amp, the "gong" is a little too loud!!

I didnt see a gong setting in the radio service menu. Also there was actually a visual of how many clicks your volume is at. It appears the max number of "clicks" you can turn the **** is 57.

And another thing to note is that there may also be another problem with the "turn on volume".

I was playing with mine this morning. I can set the turn on volume anywhere from 0-53 on my car but the system will only memorize it if it is between 0 and 29 (55%-60% of total volume). if I set the number to anything above 29 when the radio is turned off and turned back on to save the settings it reverts the max turn on volume back to 29.

The above setting is the DSP / VOL setting in the service menu.

The above may have been changed on other software revisions but may also may have changed for the worse. In fact i think mine might have changed for the worse as i did have some software upgrades done early on in my cars life due to really bad sound. The software upgrade did help but the major portion of that sound system software upgrade was for the OEM HiFi Amp.

When it comes to the gong there really is no way to adjust it other than what you have already done. See you other post about this subject I put more info there.

So the actual 3/4 setting should be around "41 clicks" of the volume control. Correct?

The 28 clicks of the steering wheel puts the volume at 100%!! The steering wheel increases the volume by 2 every time you hit it.

I should have stated that 57 clicks was from 0. I forgot what the setting is when the unit turns on. It might have been about 20, so just make sure that you are not counting 28 steering wheel presses from the point when the unit turns on.

not on my 09 MCS with the non hifi system...I start my car and then turn the volume completely down....and 28 clicks get me to 3/4...maybe a tad higher than 3/4 but certainly not 100%.

I played around with this last night. I went into the radio service menu and played with the MFSW volume controller and volume **** to see what it did. I have the ins't worth its salt base system on an '09 MC. Here is what i found.

1. The volume ranges from 0 to 57
2. My system turns on at 14
3. Each physical click of the volume **** increased the volume by 1.
4. The MFSW control would sometimes increase it by 1 sometimes by 2. I couldnt get very good control over it. I would say it was 50/50.

What I saw in point 4, seems logical considering that klipper said, 28 presses of MFSW to get to 100%. 57 -14 = 43 regular **** turns to get to 100%. Or 28 presses of the MFSW 14 * 2 + 14 = 42. Thrown in a possible 3x press on the MFSW and it makes sense.

If klipper needs the volume at 3/4 I would recommend turning the volume all the way down, a couple of turns of the **** would do the trick. Then turn the **** 43 times to the right.

I may be wrong on this but I think what klipper wants is to have it at 3/4 all the time without having to change it every time he gets in the car. It seems klipper probably needs it that way for some aftermarket add on in his stereo system.

I reviewed klippers posts. I didnt see anything stating that he/she needed the volume to be locked in at 3/4. Rather a way to find that point or a distortion point. Which I think if memory serves me correctly is a way to go about setting the input gain settings on an amp. But I could be wrong.

Through some very rigorous testing when I first picked up my car I found that the "head unit" (hifi system, but same head unit used in base system) does not hit distortion through out the full volume control range when connected to an aftermarket Apline PDX 5 amp. The head unit will hit distortion if connected to a very low impedance item like speakers at about 60% volume but when connected to a normal aftermarket amp with a 100 ohm or higher input impedance it will not distort even at full volume.

Now with all that said. It may have changed since my 08 build. Who really knows what changes MINI has made and kept the same part number.
