Y Cable (Bluetooth Audio package) doesn't work with iPhone OS 3

Arrrghhhh!!!!

I updated to the new iPhone O.S. 3.0 last night, and now the Bluetooth Audio package in my 2008 MCS (using the Mini's custom Y-cable) does not recognize the iPhone audio output. This always worked before updating the iPhone.

Here is what happens. I start the iPod portion of the iPhone and plug in the cable. It comes up with the "unsupported accessory" message that it always did and tries to connect. Then it goes into a continuous - trying to connect and failing cycle. On the Mini's audio menu - you see USB but not iPod.

So now I have a $500 audio integration package and a $100 Y-cable that doesn't play music. That's a lot of money for a bluetooth connection to my phone.

Anybody else have this problem and solve it?

If there is any brightside to this at all - I suppose this means that Mini will have to finally develop a new Y-cable as no new iPhone will work with the existing one. Maybe this one will actually charge the iPhone.

Interesting. I did the update as well. I have a dedicated iPod for the car, so i don't use my phone. But not good that it doesn't work.

Little OT, but what exactly did the update provide? I see the voice memo app and I think the ability to now cut/paste sentences. What else does it do?

A pile of little enhancements - probably the biggest one beig Spotlight Search which is very powerful.

I can't tell you how much this annoys me. I would appreciate someone else with the same configuration: Bluetooth Audio, Y-cable, iPhone 3G and O.S. 3.0 trying this out and telling me if it works for them. Any assistance welcome.

It's working fine for me, actually. 2009 MCS, iPhone 3G everything worked just like it used to.

Hmmm - that is good news, I suppose...(for others at least)

Just to confirm. You have the bluetooth / audio integration package and use the Mini Y-cable?

Not sure where to go with this now - maybe reinstall O.S. 3.0...

So, you have the USB and AUX ends of the Y-cable plugged into the MINI. You then launch the iPod app. Next you plug the cable into the iPhone. Right?

Have you tried plugging the cable into the iPhone before launching the iPod app? Just a thought.

Yes - I have tried all kinds of options. An un-updated iPhone works perfectly as does an un-updated iPod Touch. Thanks for the reply - I'll try any suggestion - I really need to solve this.

I'm sorry for you - but I am kind of glad that it is not only me having this problem. Hopefully the whizz kids on this forum can solve this thing together...

VanMan,

Just checked my iPhone 3G with OS 3.0 on my 08 MCS with bluetooth/audio integration and the MINI Y-cable....works just fine. Hopefully you've just hit a glitch and a re-install of the OS 3.0 will fix it. Good luck and let us know.

Sorry to say, my MCS predated the USB option. So, no integration with the NAV screen or MFSW. However, Bluetooth works fine, I get reliable charging through the cigarette lighter socket, and good quality sound through the AUX with my iPhone 3G running OS 3.0. (Otherwise, I might be able to be of more help because I have some technical experience with the iPhone. A friend and I have an iPhone app on the iTunes store, and the Mac version got an endorsement yesterday from David Pogue in the NY Times. )

On the other hand, since my iPhone works reliably on my MCS, perhaps I'm not missing much without the USB.

Yes - I can use the AUX function still (if I disconnect the USB plug) - but that doesn't display the track information on the display or allow steering wheel controls. The USB telephone connection works fine.

I did a full iPhone restore from scratch without error and it still behaves the same. Life sucks...

My car works fine with the USB/ipod cable and an iPhone 3GS, except it will not charge the phone. I had a 1st gen iPhone and it charged it when it was plugged in.

It's not just MINI having the problem. Since I upgraded my 2nd gen iPod Touch with the V3 code, my BMW 335i with iDrive and iPod/USB connectivity using the Y-cable works intermittently at best. When it does play, it'll typically work until I turn off the car. When I restart the car, sometimes the iPod works, and sometimes it doesn't. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme nor reason to it working, or not.

Clearly Apple has changed something that breaks the BMW connectivity. Hopefully Apple will fix it and not make us have to get an update from BMW or it'll be $$$$.

Let's hope that Apple addresses this in their next update - I'm not holding my breath. Its very difficult to assume that anything other than the 3.0 upgrade can be responsible. its the only change that I made.

Some people are working just fine with this combination, though. Makes me wonder if there is some setting somewhere that causes the conflict.

Hmm. Here's a thought. My cell phone provider blocks internet tethering on my iPhone because I only have a 500 MB plan. I wonder if this is interfering with tethering my iPhone to the USB port on the Bluetooth Audio setup....

Any tech-heads out there?

Sigh...manged to enable tethering via some assistance from the local hacker - but no happiness on the iPod connection to the Mini...

When you say "internet tethering" do you mean using your iPhone as a wireless modem for your computer? I'm not sure how that would affect connecting to the MINI. The MINI doesn't use the internet for anything iPhone related, that I'm aware of. Tethering to the MINI is more like tethering to iTunes on your computer. It is a wired connection between the iPhone and the OBC of the MINI.

Yes - Internet tethering to a PC as a wireless modem is what I meant exactly.
You are right also in that it is not related. I suspected that restricting tethering over USB might interfere with the USB connection of the Y-cable (the 3.5 mm connection seems to still work). I was wrong - enabling tethering did noting to help.

Its going to have nothing to do with the MINI, because the iPhone is not using USB when using the Y-Cable anyway. The box in the Y-Cable converts from USB to serial, and then the Y-Cable talks serial to the iPhone. The iPhone has no idea USB is even involved at all.
