Secret hiding place stereo?

Hi guys ever since i bought my mini i was disapointed that it didnt have double din spaceing to put in a dvd/touchscreen monitor.

Then i got an idea, what if you could put in one of those 6inch flip up single din dvd/touchscreen monitors inside the SECRET comparment?

i dont know if this has been done already, nor do i know:
a) if it will fit
b) if any monitor opens down, instead of up so it doesnt hit the secret compartment door.
c) if it is possible

Do you guys know of a screen that opens down?
or should i just stop wasting time and get the factory NAV?

also, i have the HIFI stereo and im looking into upgrading it maybe changing the amp, and speakers, and possibly putting in a small 10" sub.

anyones help is greatly apreciated thanks.

Start reading through the threads in this forum!

General opinion is that once you have the Hi-Fi, you're stuck with that amp.

You have many options on swapping out the speakers, and adding a small sub -- many of us like the boss audio bass600 (8 inch, but for my money very well matched to the mini), also available under other names.

Have fun!

well i wanted to at least, change out the whole speakers, and put in a 800-1000 watt amp, to make it loud.

the 8 inch sub might be a good thing too, i hear alot of pple like to put it where the tools and jack go...
so i might do that too.

but dont tell me that im stuck to this damn amp !!!! i hate it

Okay, I won't tell you you're stuck with the amp.

But--

It's integrated into the electronics -- the seat belt warning, and all the warning sounds come through the amp. So does bluetooth sound if you have the bluetooth option. And all the magic of muting whatever sound is going through the system to switch to bluetooth audio, or a warning chime, is built into the amp and run through the control bus.

The dealer diagnostics won't pass unless the amp is there, connected to its respective busses, and powered up.

You're not stuck with it, but you're not stuck with the camshaft, either... It's just a matter of how much effort (expense) you're willing to expend.

Change the speakers. Put in a sub.

And have fun!

thanks for the reply.

and well i had no idea all of that went through it. (the "gong" + bluetooth and all that other stuff)

so whats the best step to take? (i dont plan on spending more than 600dll on sound)
swap out the speakers, leave the regular amp in.
and just conect a sub with its own amp separtely?

My friend--

I think that is your best approach, to replace the speakers and add a sub, such as the self-powered subs we have discussed in this forum. Robin Cassady (among others) have hi-fi cars, and have followed that path.

have fun!

I've had this very same idea for a few months but not for dvd use, it was for a rear view camera monitor.
I have yet to take a close enough look at the monitors that are out there in order to determine a fit.

Actually all the sounds are generated in the head unit, not the amp. but replacing the head unit will cause you to loose all of the items above.

If you plan on doing this upgrade i recommend you just leave the standard head unit and amp in place. Put your touch screen in the secret compartment and amp in the spare tire space or space above it and then just disconnect the wires from the speakers (do not short them together just tape each one up separately) and put in the speakers you want.

The only part that i am not sure about is having the screen fold down instead of up. You can probably find a unit that is capable of this but it may be rather expensive.

This is very true. also the dealer will not be able to due required updates with out the amp at least connected while the upgrades are done.

I have Focal Polyglass 165 V3 E in the front and Infinity Kappas in the rear. I enjoy the sound very much but the Focals are not cheap.

This thread has a lot of good info in it.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...nt-how-to.html

I believe that there is also info in that thread about how to run new speaker wires thru the existing wiring holes. This may be of help to the shop or yourself when doing the install.

Others have used Infinity speakers and have noted they are very satisfied with the sound and they are about half the price of the Focals. I am sure if you use any good name brand speaker you will find it much better than the original speakers. In fact i believe that the speaker change makes the laregest difference. You may want ot go about that route first and if you still need more power then add a head unit and amp.

I installed Infinity Reference Speakers and an SSL Soundstorm USS8 sub, and couldn't be happier. All of these choices were based on other NAM members recommendations. However, I have the standard 6 speaker stereo. A better choice for the HiFi in the Infinity line may be the Kappas, since these are 2 ohm.

I agree with Schatzy62, I really don't think it needs an amp (especially in the small cabin space) but everyone is different, so you need to do what will sound best to you.

+1 on replacing the speakers first, then seeing if you still feel you need the headunit & amp.

i have the HIfI system so im guessing i need 2 ohm grade speakers right?
i rly dont know alot about speakers although im good at wiring and stuff.
il probably just get the speakers first, and just put in a small 8-10" sub where the tools go.

Yes, two ohm preferred but 4 ohm would work as well.

Check some of the other threads for here for suggestions on a small sub, people are using all different kinds that seem to work well.

It is best to take it one step at a time, and changing the speakers first will make a huge difference.

So a thought would be to keep the stock amp doing what it's doing and add a second amp all together and just wire it up that way...you'll need to run new wiring for the big three as well as speaker wiring but that's what you get into when you start this type of project.
