Custom mounting plate for tweeter in smaller door speaker space

For all of you who have put tweeters in the upper 3 1/2 speaker space, what material did you use to make your adaptor plat from?

One post here used 1/4" expanded PVC, so I tracked down a source and they recommended against it as they said it would begin to melt/deform on a hot summer day.

My Polk MM6501 speakers arrive on Thursday, so I want to get all my material in place for my weekend installation project.

Haven't done it, but would MDF work? It seems to be favored for speaker cabinets.

i'm curious too since my 3.5" replacement tweeters have big gaps not that i could hear the difference anyway. how about this plastic waffle board with pre-marked templates at Crutchfield?

Abs plastic. it should be avaliable at any car audio shop. Make sure any plate you build is covered in a sound deading material hushmat, dynamat etc... you can also use mdf it is denser and the more proper thing to do but as you are using a lower end speaker (under $1000) the abs should do just fine.

as a side note use a jig saw to cut the plastic plate. The "waffel board" you saw on crutchfield is abs plastic. Your local shop will sell it in 12" square plates with or with out the grid plate.

and my experience in car audio tells me that you will probably have to build riser pod to fit your woofer in the 6.5" spot not only is the hole not round in the mini doors but the window is very close to the panel. for this you will need 3/4 mdf or ply and again once mounted covered in a deadner. I will try to post some of my install pics in my gallery shortly I have 8" woofers in my doors!!

I used some 1/4" Lucite(TM) that I had in the scrap box. Traced the outline of the speaker frame and tweeter mounting cup on the paper backing, then used a Dremel tool with a router base and a RotoZip bit; freehanding the Dremel didn't work quite as cleanly as I would have liked, but good enough.

And Polk db6501 "woofers" mount in the lower space without any riser or window fouling - just marked/drilled correct mounting holes in the plastic.

Well, I used some 1/8 ABS plastic. The adaptor plate was easy.

It's the door lock that is giving me fits!
