Clubman HI-FI Speaker replacement

Alright.. I know this topic has been beaten to death. I've searched and I've read and read and read.... I still have a question, and I didn't want it to get buried on one of the massive threads. Apology over..

As it says in the title, I have an 2008 Clubman sport with HI-FI.

I can NOT find a straight answer as to what SIZE the front speakers can be replaced with. I see a lot of folks going for the FOCALs, which is what I want to do. Can someone just tell me if you can get a 4" speaker in the mid-range hole? Some people talk about cutting out the hole bigger, which I'm happy to do, so long as the windows will still roll down (depth limit)!

The set I'm looking at is:

Focal 165A3 - Focal 6.5" + 4" Access 3-Way Component Speakers - $369.00

http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?...roduct_ID=7028

Thanks for any clairification you can give.. and again, sorry about the new thread... I'm so sick of searching this forum.

From what I've seen the front doors are nearly identical between the Clubman and Cooper. I am in the process of doing the same swap and had not found that site, thanks a lot as this may solve my problem.

After doing some number crunching it looks like they will fit.

Front lowers (in doors) are 5.25" one ways with a 5.5" opening for the basket. The mounting depth is about 3.125". You can up to a 6.5" in the lower door as long as the basket opening is no bigger than 5.5"

From Focal's site
http://www.focal-america.com/extras/...ss/A3_Spec.pdf

2.55" mounting depth
5.55" opening (may need to open it up just a tad)

Front uppers (in doors) are 3.5" one ways with a 3 -5/8 opening for the basket. Mounting depth is 2.25"

I couldn't find the specs on the particular 4" speaker used in the component kit but the 4" coaxials are
http://www.focal-america.com/extras/...0CA1_techx.pdf

2.09" mounting depth
3.70" opening

Hope this helps.

We will forgive you for missing this post.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...6&postcount=12

Where is says i just installed 4" speakers in the door. BTW the one i just installed are the ones you are looking at.

I did not have to cut out the hole any but the OEM speaker has a three (3) screw mounting and the 4" has a four (4) screw mounting.

As for the 6.5" the hole hole placement is different than the OEM also.

Wouldn't you love to do 2 MINIs at the same time?

That boot always gets me in trouble...

Yeah, well I'd like to hear the difference before I drop that kinda change on them, though. I've been overall satisfied with the sound, but if the Focals are a great improvement, I might consider...

Hopefully, you'll be able to hear them at the Christmas party then.

Well I went and did it. I ordered the 165A3's and a set of matching 6x9's, what the heck might as well. I also went ahead and ordered some sound dampening material for the rear hatch area, since I have to remove all the interior anyway.

I am considering doing the same. Have you had a chance to install and use these yet. Would love to hear some feedback about these

Thanks guys for posting your investigation. Looking forward to hearing the results .

I did happen to see the following on Focal's web-site. Buyer beware:-

In addition please be advised that the following sites are NOT authorized
Focal Retailers and warranties on any Focal products purchased through
these companies will not be honored by Focal America.
www.woofersetc.com

just pulled trigger on the 165A3's and the Boss sub ($69.99 at amazon right now)... will be a fun xmas project. Those 165A3's better work out... they're my wife's xmas pres to me and woofersetc.com have the worst return policy in the world.

After Xmas the dealer will be replacing my radio as I've been having problems with FM/HD... so my 'HiFi' might get three bumps up by the new year*. Can't wait.

(also means that if my newbie wiring skills end up blowing up the stereo, the new one might save my butt

You might want to wait for the dealer to do the replacements before modifying the system. You don't want them voiding your warranty before it is all sorted.

Yeah ... I thought about that, but the chances of me blowing it up are higher than them fussing about the wty... I might give 'em a call tomorrow just to be sure they won't give me grief.

I am very interested in your review. I have been debating between the 165A3s and 165VR3s. I am thinking that eventually I will add an amp for these speakers and am wondering if you are planning on doing this.
