New Speaker Setup - Need Help/Opinions

Hey All,

I need some help buying speakers for my 05 S. I've already installed a new head unit (Pioneer DEH-P9800BT). Now I want to install some better speakers. I just want clear full sound, but have no idea what to get.

From my research these seem to be pretty good, and fit right into the budget.

here is what i am thinking of getting for the front:
Polk MMC5250
http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...MMC5250&tp=106

and back:
Polk/MOMO MMC690
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-CmcyyQw...px?I=107MMC690

1) will these fit? (from what i read fronts are 5.25", and back 6x9. although crutchfield says the back 6x9 wont fit)
2) will these sound good together?
3) do i need an amp? (i believe the head unit is 50wx4)

thanks in advance for the help. this is my first stab at setting up any system.

here's a great resource... http://metraonline.com/fit.aspx according to metra your cars speaker size is:

Front Speaker 6.5" and 3.5" deep
Front Tweeter 1" and 2" deep
Rear Speaker 6X9" and 3.5" deep

as far as the speakers go, it sounds like your budget is around 200 dollars for the front (topside) and 100(ish) for the rears. i personally HATE polk speakers...

with that being said, you have a good radio which is the base to a good sounding stereo. Personally i would spend all your money on the front component speakers and leave the rears alone (the rears are mainly for fill and a 6x9 that sounds decent are pretty hard to find).

There are a TON of speakers out there that will out preform the Polks for close to the same price... Pioneer speakers sound great and are pretty reasonably priced. http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...neer/TS-D1320C if you want to spend a little more, you can have JL VR components which also sound teriffic for the price http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...i&i=136VR525CS

if you dont plan on adding an amplifier you wont really take full advantage of any decent aftermarket speaker. While the radio you have claims to be putting out 50x4 in reality it is putting out a lot less.

finally, if you insist on having aftermarket rears, i would use a speaker plate to adapt 6 1/2" into the 6x9 hole, the plates are cheap and the sound you will get out of a 6 1/2 is way better than a 6x9.

awesome thanks so much for the advice. what you said about spending all my money on the front speakers really makes sense. maybe i'll just put the money i was going to use for rear speaker towards an amp instead. then i can get the most out of the front ones. i'll check out the pioneers and JL links.

well i guess next step is to research amps!

thanks again.

fwiw, I've had good luck with infinity kappa series. For more money, the focal line is great, but really needs an amp. For amps, I'd look at the Alpine PDX series, they fit great in the space under the carpets if you don't have nav.

I have 6.5 Polk MOMO speakers in front and have had many comments on how good they sound. There are spacers available that will allow them to fit.

They will also sound much better with more power than your head unit will provide.

They are one of the best buys in speakers in that price range.

I also have an Alpine 9887 head unit and 2 Alpine amps with a 10" MOMO subwoofer.

Why not look into Focal speakers?

I chose the Polk db5251 for the front, because it came with a spacer/adaptor for installation, so I didn't have to buy or make a custom spacer. I believe the MMC5250's should also come with the spacer.

I suggest running amp to the speakers. Your speakers will sound better with more power. I'm using the Alpine PDX-5, which I installed underneath the passenger seat (under the carpet).

I bought all my car stereo components from either Crutchfield.com or eBay.

I had the MMC650 components and MMC690 in my 944, and they were spectacular. Very accurate and crystal clear mids - better than the H/K speakers in my MCS for sure. The 6x9's in particular make tremendously accurate lows - I could have sworn there was a bassist in my trunk on songs with good source quality. The only thing to watch out for is the highs... They can be a bit bright, especially for a soft-dome tweeter. There are 2 levels of attenuation on the crossover though, so you can do a degree of damage control there. And I know everyone screams that they NEED an amp to really cook, but don't freak out! I honestly didn't see a huge difference between running them off a 26w RMS head unit or a 140w RMS RF punch amp. They still sound brilliant on HU power.

All in all, fantastic speakers. 100% recommended.

Don't get the db's, the MOMO's are much better. Run highs at -6 on passive crossover so they are not so bright on the fronts.

I've had both in my MINI.

thanks all for the helpful info. i found a set of mb quarts (PCE213) for around $90. i know these are old (discontinued) but for that price i might take a shot. then get an amp (looking at pioneer) for additional power.

any comments on the mb quarts?
