Are CD tracks supposed to restart from the beginning?

I just bought a 2007 Mini Cooper S with a hi fi sound system. Whenever I turn off the car and restart it after a short period, a few minutes maybe, the CD player continues playing a track from the point at which it stopped. But if the car is off for longer, then the track restarts from the beginning. This is also true for MP3 CD's. Is this supposed to happen, and if so, is there any way to set the CD player to restart at the same point at which it ended?

The reason I ask is that I listen to audiobooks with long tracks, and it is annoying to have to relisten to the beginning of a section. I have started using a portable MP3 player that saves its position and restarts at the same point, but it is a little inconvient too with batteries and having to mess with little buttons.

Yep- that's the way it's designed to work, but you can work around it by muting the stereo with the volume **** button before you turn off the car. This has worked for me, as long as I come back to the car using the same key (since the comfort access has key-specific settings and the audio stuff is included with that)

Do you mean just punching the volume **** to basically turn off the CD player? I tried this today, but no luck. When I started the car later in the day, the CD track restarted at the beginning.

No. He means pushing the volume **** to put it in MUTE mode, then killing the car.

Yep- if you've got a Nav screen, you get an icon of a speaker with a slash through it displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the screen.

My car is an R56 MCS w/ HiFi also, built in September 07. I've been using this trick with an MP3 CD, but I don't know that I've tried with a CD Audio track. I'll give it a go today and see.

I don't have a Nav screen, just a giant speedometer with a CD player under it. When I push the volume button, the CD actually stops. Not sure there is a Mute function. I would define Mute as the CD continuing to play with no sound coming from the speaker.

It's not really muting. When playing a CD, you hit it and the CD stops playing. If it was a mute function it would keep the CD playing. The manual also doesn't call it a mute function. The speaker with / through it icon means it's off. Now with radio stations or sat radio, you could call it a mute.

Mine always start over, but I've gotten away from the CD and use mostly my IPOD.
