GPS enabled Laptop
Anyone know of any good software to draw a map based on GPS with a laptop. I would like to to be somewhat automatic so I just drive it maps.
Idealy it would also record via the mic or attached video camera at the same time?

Well if I'm going on a local run, I take mine with me..... Gateway Tablet (required for school) and the Garmin GPS18 USB antenna and the included software. WORKS GREAT!!!
The antenna as a magnetic base so i just open the sunroof and stick it to the roof. Laptop in the passenger seat and all works well.

Check out the CoPilot products. I use Copilot 6 for my PDA and its great. The bluetooth GPS adaptor also works with my notebook and I have used it with MS Streets and Trips and a few other mapping apps. I took the train from DC to Chicago via NYC and mapped the whole route.... It was pretty cool.
Another feature of Copilot is a web interface so people can track your route and make suggestions for stops via the GPS/Web interface.

I have a GPS (Microsoft USB) but software to auto map while I drive is what I would like (Streets and trips doesnt do this)
I would love something like Window 1 Moving map Window 2 video of the drive from USB Web cam in windshield. So as you see the route being driven you can tell exactly where you are on the map.
or am I best off to capture the mapping portion and the video portion then stitch them together in Premier or what ever video software?

You might want to explore the technologies used by Google and Microsoft for their street level views on their mapping products. That however, I believe, is still photography.
Other possiibilities.... check out Red Hen Systems, they have some stuff that may work for you.

Check out Delorme, it is a good mapping software package, and a few peeps at my work have the GPS receiver and like it a lot. You can have voice recognition to show you routes and nearby poi's. It's not too expensive at all, $69.95 with the receiver and all, plus your own laptop. You can even get crazy and add a laptop mount in the car for all this, kinda like a police cruiser setup.
I use the software to map out our business locations throughout the south. There is a lot you can do with the software
