TEAMMIGHTYMINIZ Announces the Intake Shootout/Dyno Day
Time to address this issue
Ok San Diego MINI owners, now it is our turn to try something out…
A Dyno Day
We would like to invite everyone to attend a Dyno Day held at JBA Racing in San Diego Saturday, October 29, 2005. We have a limit of 13 cars for the day. The deal is 2 pulls for $45.00. Below is the reservation list. If there are any no-shows, we will fill the spaces on a first-come first-served basis. Dyno for the shootout will begin around 8 AM and others at around 9 AM. Sign-up below if you would like to get a Dyno of your car.
In conjunction with the Dyno Day, TMMZ will be conducting a shootout between various air intake systems. We will be installing and testing each intake at the dyno event. We invite everyone to come and watch the numbers for these various intakes. We will be testing Alta, Helix and M7 and possibly others.
For installation of the intakes, the guys from Creative Autoworks have agreed to help out. Providing a neutral opinion for installation, they have many years of experience with tuning cars. They are excited to paricipate with the shootout to help break-in their new facility.
Creative Autoworks is located just around the block from the Dyno location. They have offered to do other installations a BBQ, and have offered some great deals. So if you are interested, please give them a call (858.279.8900) so they can order your parts.
The TEAMMIGHTY MINIZ Air Intake Shootout

A third party will be used for installations. The car shall be allowed to cool or heat until oil temperature matches the initial number. If possible, after each dyno test the installer will take a short test drive to feel the difference.

As for reseting the computer, what happens when the ECU doesn't have time to "learn" to use the extra air its getting? I understand the different ECU's will have different learned habits but what happens when you want them to learn what they can do with the mods installed?
Good suggestions.
1. We have requested the JCW. The local dealer will not do this by itself, and says that it must be part of the entire kit. A different place has not responded.
2. The plan is to reset the computer before each test (including the stock). The biggest key is consistancy.
as for the third - i will try to get that included.

Great idea!!!
Wish I could be there.
Oh well, job comes first.

thanks for taking on this task, esp knowing that there will be posts after posts of people questioning everything!
Is there a way that you could set up a video camera in the exact same location & video the runs to get an idea of intake noise as well? Granted, I know it is different that being in the car, and the rollers make some noise, but it would be great to have sound clips from teh same car on the same day under the same results.
I would also hope that you could score a JCW intake by then, as well as the HAI.
thanks!

Yup, this will be recorded. The tests will be recorded to portray the consistency between tests, and to allow people to hear the sound of each intake as it's being revved. We also plan to document the install process so people can get an idea of what is involved in each installation.
In terms of the HAI and JCW, we are in contact with MINI dealers and K&N officials about obtaining the test intake (K&N - both about their intake kit, and the filter necessary for the HAI). We too hope that they are able to provide us with some nice test pieces. We would like all intakes to have equal chances, so using a USED intake (from someone else's car) would be less than desirable. Of course, we will let you know about any updates regarding the availability of the test pieces.
And if you are in the area, please feel free to stop by. What better way to gauge which intake noises you like than to actually be their while the MCS howls on the dyno
Please, continue with any questions you have. We will try to answer them as soon as possible
Cheers

This is gonna be a blast.. and pretty informative. Can't wait to see you all there!
It will be nice to see the results in person, with my own eyes, knowing that they are fair.... I own an aftermarket intake and I hope mine does good

We need to get some more people to come out and dyno and hang out with MINI owners
