2006 R52 Manual Transmission Project

A continuation of my intro thread in 1st Gear

Known problems so far:
  • Fuel gauge not registering: Half a tank of new premium fuel and a new fuel pump are in place, but the MINI doesn't seem to realize it has fuel in it, with a flat fuel gauge. Attempts to reset the ECU ran into a problem when using the amazing guide by shorty_du_op. Specifically I get stuck at step #5 when I get into the system but am supposed to "scroll through" to choose the next option, but how do you scroll with just one button to push? When I push the button at that step it seems to revert back to simple odometer function.
  • No spark in 3 out of 4 plugs: Spraying starter fluid into the manifold had me hearing the engine trying to turn over. suggesting a fuel problem, however after checking spark plugs it seems like the engine was only working with one functioning spark plug.
  • The car sat for about a 12 months with the stick in neutral and I cannot shift it into any gear position. Seems as though the linkage is frozen.
  • MORE SOON
Additional items on the agenda:
  • All four rotors will be replaced
  • New wiper blades
  • The center brake light lens is missing with exposed LEDs
  • The rear tail lights stay on after turning off the car with no obvious reason why
  • New oil and filter
  • New air intake filter
  • New cabin air filter
  • New tires: the car was purchased with 215/45/R17 tires on it, but every source I can find suggests the stock tire is 205/45/R17. Unknown if the previous owner was simply trying to get a larger contact patch on the ground, but I will go back to recommended tires.

Mine had those same deteriorated rear weatherstrips. It's a half hour job, they're held on by screws. Pop the rear of the convertible top up to access all the screws.

Best price I found was just under $340 shipped. You want:

Genuine MINI Molding Left - 51137123437
Genuine MINI Molding Right - 51137123438

I bought here.

If thats out of budget I replaced mine with whine not walnuts pattented spray painted stick on trim per the thread here:https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...p-options.html

looks good to me, especially for the minimal expense involved..

As far as scroling the menus goes its was something like in this youtube clip for the later model as far as I recall. There are instructions in the video comments:

Try this:
How to Reset the ECU:
  1. With the key in the ignition, but in the off position, press and hold down the odometer reset button with one hand.
  2. While holding the button down, switch the key in the ignition to position 1 (first click) with the other hand. The screen will have a number and the word “TEST”.
  3. Scroll through the numbers by pressing the odometer rest button, through to 19 and wait a moment. (Note: the number order is: 1,2,10,19)
  4. The message will say 19 "L i-off", flash to "L i-on", and back to "L i-off" again. When "log i-off" appears, press the odometer rest button again.
  5. You are now in the system. Scroll through to 21. TEST and wait a moment. 21.0 RESET will come up. Press the button once.
  6. Your gauges will now make some sounds and movements.
  7. Once the lights come back on start your car. You have now reset your ECU and your MINI is now ready to relearn the new mods and your driving style.

Thanks, but I have tried this a few times and the problem I am having is on step 5 and scrolling through to 21. How do you scroll?

It's been a while since I've done this but I believe, as in the previous steps, you scroll using the odometer reset button. Is that not working?

Unfortunately it is not. I use it to scroll in the steps before that but trying to scroll at step 5 results in the odometer returning back to its normal function.

This doe NOT reset the ECU. It's a reset for the cluster and people and even shops have been spreading this for years. Please stop as it doesn't do anything to the ECU.
You have to use some diagnostic software to reset the adaptation in the ECU as you can't reset them any other way.

Either way I was hoping this might fix whatever is causing the fuel gauge to not respond.
