Should I change my R56 timing chain?

My mini is a 2009 s, with almost 100k miles. I got the letter in the mail about the lawsuit however I dummy hear anything weird, I did manually change the tensioner myself and when I did so I felt no pressure pushing back when I put the screw in.

I took the valve cover off and took a photo, is any damage visible from the photos?

Hello, It will have a little tension when installing it. By those looks i can only see that the top T section is intact and the guide rails look ok from the top, the top T section nylon will chip away sometimes. With that pic its hard to tell if you have slack in the chain or not , its usually the slack/ slap noise or it just hat to be measured. The T and the guide just yellow from he oil.

With 100k on your MCS I would at the very least have the chain slack measured so you know where you're at as far as the timing chain condition. It does require special tools, I would locate a reputable BMW/Mini shop.

I had the timing chain, tensioner and everything else replaced in my '07 S a couple of months ago. All covered by Mini USA.
I was told they would check the tensioner and most likely replace it, when I made my service appointment, but once they looked at it and measured the chain, they said they would replace everything.
I must say it now sounds like a new and completely different engine.

I would take yours to a dealer and have them take a look at it, if I were you.

Regards

Did you just take your Mini in and had them replace it?

So is this cover under the extended warranty due to the lawsuit?

I called my nearest Mini dealer to learn about recalls and service bulletins I had no info about, and they mentioned the Timing Chain Tensioner one, so I made an appointment. They said they would inspect it and replace it if needed. Once they did, decided to replace all parts.

After 70 k miles, I recently paid to have the tensioner changed at the dealer on my 2010 MCS. They measured the slack at that time and told me it was 70 mm. Common wisdom is the whole chain assembly needs to be replaced if slack is greater than 68 mm but they told me that spec does not apply to my VIN range. At least it's very quiet now.

If you aren't hearing anything you should probably leave it alone, even with 100K on the original chain.
