How close were you driving to the median barrier on your left?

I was on the number 1 lane next to the carpool lane. Looked in the rear view for a second and heard a thump sound and side mirror is missing.=(

Oh well that is why there is car insurance.

Hey, instead of breaking his mirror, that would have put him in a 360 degree spin!

There's probably a motorcyclist who was lane splitting and collected your mirror with his elbow.

In the Air Force we called this FOD (Foreign Object Damage). Anything from a dropped rivet sucked into the intake to a Canadian Goose in the windshield.
Either you got a chunk of FOD on the right hop to hit the mirror or just squeaked the wall. Everybody has seen one of those lane barriers out of line just a little.
Thwap! Sorry dude. Glad you are ok.

obviously a defect

start a class action suit . . .

let's begin with a poll, how many others have had the driver side mirror spontaneously explode?

I think it was cast from too thin plastic.

Dealer should replace under warranty . . .

did I miss any rants?

Seriously I wonder if insurance will put this as a comprehensive coverage claim rather than collision . . .

I always thought the exploding mirror was a 'feature'.

Comprehensive for sure. Just say you were in a construction zone or something.

That's funny. But true.

Damage may be less than deductible.

I had a truck whose mirror's would randomly fall off too. Solution: park in garage and don't drive it.

Yikes! That's worse than the time the car in front of me flipped a piece of tire up and hit my sideview mirror on a blind turn. Thankfully, I was able to buff out the marks from the tire and the mirror, by itself, is cheap to replace. I think that it only cost $13-15. Is the mirror still working or are you going to have to replace the entire thing?

That "Thump" you describe - would have me a little concerned - all joking aside - sounds like you hit 'something' what is the question..

After closer inspection, looks like the car in front kicked up some debris and broke the rear view mirror....there's a new scratch new on the hood near the A pillar =(

The housing is about $70 and mirror is about $130 at the mini dealer. Time to hit the junk yard or eBay =(
