Cheap Film / Cheap Camera

Bought a roll of cheap film at the 99¢ Store. Used my Russian camera to shoot this pic today . . .

The film: Lucky Super is rated at ISO 200
Exposed at: ISO 100
Minor photoshopping to adjust contrast, saturation, and sharpness.

Anyone else using Lomographic cameras?

Thanks Clover.
I'm just having fun with this little point 'n shoot.
The image was literally point (the camera) and (press shutter button) shoot- didn't bother to look through viewfinder.
I guess, like the film, it was a Lucky shot!

It's all about the subject matter. A bad photo of a MINI is better than a good photo of an SUV any day - LOL. Seriously, though, that is a great picture.

Great picture. Love the shots with the Lomo. I have been wanting to get one of these... I hear that its really kinda hard to shoot with... takes some getting used to. Any suggestions on a good place to pick up cheap lomo

I've longed for a Lomo -- very cool cameras. Ever used a Holga and/or Diana? Mine's been put away for much too long. I think you've inspired me to get it out, give it the black tape treatment and do some shooting!

The LC-A isn't really that difficult to shoot with. It's basically a point and shoot. If your subject is kind of close though, then you do need to make minor adjustments.

I like the Lomo LC-A for several reasons:
  • Vignetting- depending on time of day and ISO, this can give some interesting effects;
  • Color- you can get some funk going here;
  • Size- it's kind of small, like an ELPH, so it's not intrusive, especially around camera-shy subjects;
  • Appearance- along with it's small size, it's cheesy look is understating, especially when doing street photography (if I bring out the D70, all of a sudden people are more aware of a photographer in their midst).
As for obtaining a cheap one, all I can recommend is googling.

Angie,
After holding a Holga, I thought, hmmm. I can see why you'd need the black tape!
No, I've not used either camera. I've seen some pretty interesting pics shot with the Diana.

As for inspiring you, I'm glad to hear that. You should check out some of the LomoHomes for even more inspiration!

Here are a couple of street pix taken with my LC-A.

Belmont Shore, CA; Fuji's Velvia (ISO 50), Cross-Processed in C-41

CA 22 (Garden Grove Freeway) at rush hour; Kodak Gold 200 (exposed at ISO 100)

Here's a couple of my Holga shots:

You gotta tape the out of 'em, but when you get a good shot, it's really sweet. I have a friend who uses the Diana a lot professionally. Here's his site: Scott Raffe. Look under "Toy Camera" for the Diana stuff.

Angie,
Thanks for the link. The Flash Intro was cool but more impressive was the Portrait section. Your Holga pic is nice. Maybe I'll head over to Samy's and pick one up.

Those Lensbabies are cool. I have a Nikon version but would need to dig through files to find a pic. (or I could just attach it to my D70 and post it here later)

I'd love to see what you could do with a Holga! I'm a total novice, really. I just like to play and if I get something good, then it's great. If not, no biggie. The fact that it's a $20 medium format camera is what's so cool about it. :smile:

But seriously, if you get a Holga, buy black gaffers tape...several rolls. There's lots of info online, such as this: Taping the Holga. And be sure to remove the frame from inside the camera so you get the square format and the vignetted edges. And Scott told me the other day to tape up two little holes above the shutter inside. I haven't looked yet to see exactly what he meant, but not having them taped is what caused the flare in the upper right hand corner of mine.

Good luck! Keep me posted!

Okay Angie,

Here's an example of a Lensbabies pic . . . (not exactly artistic but enough to get an idea of what the lens does)

Holga-esque without all the tape!

Since you guys starting posting some of these shots you guys have helped to inspired me. I would love to pick up one of these camers... holga, lomo diana whatever.

What are the differences between these???? Also why not just adjust color saturation in photoshop or something. What are some of the differences between these cameras??? Pros Cons? Should this be a new thread???

Should add, I just ordered a Holga camera... cant wait to start shooting. Anyone shot Holga at night???

Did you also order plenty of black gaffer's tape?

I've never shot at night but there are a lot of galleries and holga info online. For example, toycamera.com/. A quick google search will find more than you'll know what to do with!

Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

I did not order any tape, but I will pick some up when the camera arrives. I will post some photos.

What are the differences between the cameras? Diana, Holga, Lomo etc? Also with Holga, what is the best type of film/processing?

The Diana and Holga are very similar, however, the Diana is more desirable as it doesn't have quite the light leak problem. The Diana was made in the 50s through 70s I believe and the Holga is still being made. Don't know how the Lomo cameras compare, or if there's a model similar to the Holga or Diana. They have a lot of different models and can get kinda pricey.

As for processing, I have the film developed and a contact sheet made. I can scan the contact sheet or choose what I want for enlargement that way. My film processor is familiar with the Holgas and isn't shocked by all the leaks and vignetting. The first time I had film processed they were like "uh, there's a problem with your camera...". Now they get it and appreciate the quality of the photography.

Hope this was helpful! Always happy to turn someone on to the Holga!

The Lomo LC-A's ruggedly constructed metal body differentiates it from the "toy" cameras. I've yet to encounter problems with light leakage.

The other thing about LC-A, and other LOMO, photographs is that they can be of high enough quality for commercial use.

One more thing . . . the LC-A and Colorsplash both use 35mm film that you can get processed at your local 1-hour, if you so desire.
