Dashcams and Radar Detectors

Hello all,
I am considering getting either DOD LS300W or the DVR 027 720p. Does anyone have these that can give me some good feedback info? For Radar Detectors I was thinking of going with the Escort Passport 9500ix again any feedback would be great!

I have the 9500ix radar detector, and I believe it's one of the best you can get. The range is good, and the GPS lockout feature keeps the false alarms at bay. Escort are running a $50 discount on them right now. That said, they've got a new detector out that looks pretty nice, too.

I just bought the Escort Redline. Based on my research it is better for more open road long distance driving. I bit more sensitive and false alarms in town. The 9500IX is better option if it used more in an urban setting. Just did 1500 mile PHX to Seattle in open range country. Lots of cops are driving around not running any radar at all. Half my encounters they we just driving by not running radar. I figured on the way to dinner or a call or going off shift. I did get hit once with instant on. I saw it looked like a Tahoe in NV so I lifted and was slowing. I just on the brakes when he lit me up and I got her down under 80 which was enough in NV to let drive on by. I got an alert in OR and slowed down. Guys running with me blew on by flying and the cop just drove by. He would have nailed them if he was on the hunt an I would have been fine. teamed up with a GPS that has redlight and camera warnings it a great road trip detector. Not sure I will even run it in town but we will see. Heading to the Seattle office this morning so I will see how it does in an urban setting.

Why not just do the speed limit? You'll get better MPG anyway

Been using a V1 for almost 20 years. I just update it every 4-5 years. It has saved me many speeding tickets. Yes I know I could slow down.

V1 radar detector. Expensive, but well worth it in my opinion. BlackVue HD dashcam. Small and discrete.

Another vote for the Valentine 1. Directional arrows and bogie counter are the bomb. And to get new features, you don't have to buy an all-new one. Just send it in for an upgrade. Depending on how old yours is, the upgrade may be anywhere from $25 to $200. Much cheaper than buying a new Escort every few years.

Sorry to revive an old thread.....

What makes the Blackvue worth the $250 compared to a $80 dashcam? It is very expensive when compared to Chinese made dashcams on the market

Funny, I was just reading about dashcams earlier today:

http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-dash-cam/

Excerpt:

After testing one out, we don’t think there’s any reason to drop $400 on a dash cam. I drove around with and reviewed video from a Pittasoft BlackVue DR500GW-HD and definitely didn’t find it to be $300 better than the DVR-027. At $380 on the company’s site (a little over $300 on Amazon), you get GPS tracking, clean software for reviewing video and a compact cylindrical design. One notable benefit is the security of buying from an established and professional international manufacturer that’ll give you a six-month warranty. Unlike buying from sketchy third-party distributors (the exception being the eBay seller we’ve been recommended), you’re guaranteed to receive a fully functional unit that’ll work out of the box.

The BlackVue’s strength is its comprehensive and intuitive viewing software, which I’m using here. Still, we don’t think it’s worth the high price.
The BlackVue’s cam is the most feature-laden one we looked at, but unless you need every single statistic on your driving, the extras seem superfluous to us. Its Wi-Fi connectivity lets you use the BlackVue app to watch video or track the car’s path with the cam’s built-in GPS. You won’t use this much, unless, say, you come back to your parked car that’s been hit and want to check the parking mode footage immediately. Its audio recording can be turned on or off with your voice—if you have a potentially reckless teenage driver, it’ll track the car’s speed, too, but so can the Lukas. The camera comes with BackVue software, which gives a video editor-style display of the video recordings with a map that pinpoints the location according to the video timeline.

We wouldn’t drop that kind of cash yet, especially with the LK-7900 available for cheaper. Reviewers have pointed out that the DR500GW-HD has issues with pixelation and overheating, and in our tests, the unit would get very hot even at night with the air conditioning on—BlackVue rates it to work at up to 158 degrees Fahrenheit, but the DR400G HD II, this model’s predecessor, was notorious for overheating. Concerns with previous models’ reliability is also a concern. A firmware update will be able to solve most of these problems, but for most drivers, a basic camera like the DVR-027 will deliver everything you need from a dash cam.
