Shooting In-car Video

Hey guys,

I? was wondering if you folks had any thoughts on the right type of mount to use for a camera mounted to capture in-car video. I have a Flip video that I want to use but I have no idea how to mount it short of duck taping it to the passenger seat...

Anyone have any thoughts or tips on how and where it should be placed to get the best shots?

Thanks!

Take a look at the GorillaPod lineup (http://joby.com/gorillapod/original/). That might work for you

I'll second the Gorilla pod. Used it with my flip while at Mini's on the Dragon. I will upload a picture of the way I mounted it and the video from it tomorrow for you.

Below is a picture of the way I used my GorillaPod. That is the heftier DSLR version for my big camera and has a tripod head on it but you could do it with the smaller one easy. I changed out my old Flip for a newer HD Kodak with image stabilization - that really helps in a car.

Below is how the video looks from that location. This is what I took at the Dragon.

I also saw someone there (I think it may have been MiniBee) rig their camera to the front tow hook for a really cool by the road look.

That looks like a sweet set up!

I was playing around with it last night but the flexible tripod that came with the car is really too small to make a set up like this work so it looks like I'll have to invest in a Gorilla.

Stabilization is a good idea too. I managed to wedge mine into the split between the rear seats and then I drove it around the block (<10mph) to test it out. Every time I hit a bump the camera vibrated like CRAZY so I'm not sure how the picture would be if you were doing any sort of spirited driving!!

Thanks for posting!! Thats really helpful.

There's a thread about this, there's lots of ideas there.

I built my own out of a plank of wood and some plywood.

I use a Cruisecam mount attached to the driver's side headrest with a GoPro HD camera. Here's a pic on the Cruisecam site which pretty much shows what the mount would look like on the front seats.

And this is what the setup looks like when taking videos.
