just stumbled across this thread... good timing.
My wife and I are (me actually) wanting to get a "real" camera. I know this will be a very broad question...but is htere a great starter camera that has the "must have" features we should start to look at and learn about?

Up until now we hav ealways had small cannon 3-5 megapixel cameras that fit in your pocket...they just do not compare to the pictures our friends take with their SLRs.

What is a good place to start to learn about cameras online....any advice for a noob would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

In the Nikon line if you can afford the D5000 that would be a good place to start. The D3000 is a good camera, but it lacks some of the features, and once you get comfortable with the hobby, some of those features you will want to have. If you can afford the D90 that camera will allow you to use older lenses that need a screw drive. You are not likely to need those lenses any time soon though.
Other camera makers make like products so find the brand that feels best in your hand, the features you like, and a user interface that makes sense to you. If you can rent the camera for a weekend before buying.

That is the difference in glass and features. SLRs are just more flexible. Be sure to take a class after buying a camera. It will help you more than you can imagine.

I like www.DPReview.com. There are forums for each camera maker, and subfourms by type of camera with in a brand. There is a forum just for beginners (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/fo...estions-forum/).
