No pups were stuffed err well hurt anyway...
Twenty or thirty minutes before taking the picture inside the house we trained Zelda to retrieve a liver treat off the top of the camera/tripod. While my daughter was working with Zelda I went outside and set up the picture. Kona would not stand on the structure in this shot as she did in the old shot above, even for a treat. I had gone for a very short drive and the engine bay was still to warm for her to be comfortable. At 14 Kona knows that she will get the treat anyway.
With everything in place we placed the dogs at stay then said Ok. My daughter quickly moved back a few steps. It took us three or four trys to get a good set of shots. I took about 20 shots. I then moved in the house and cropped the picture to what you see in the contest (below)
The shot would have been better if I took the newspaper out of the picture. The paper would have been there if I was working on my car so I'm not to upset about that. I would have liked to shoot the picture from a lower angle, about eye level with the Kona, the larger dog but I had to be ready to move if they took off after something.
Some of the other shots can be seen here http://dac.smugmug.com/gallery/2432214#191788267
Thanks for the kind words.

John,
I didn't notice the newspaper until you mentioned it.
Thanks for the back story. As soon as my girlfriend and I saw the shot we knew it was special. Great work in executing the composition. That's easily one of the more memorable photos from the past few years of the monthly photo contest.
Best,
Dave

Don't ya dare apologize, that's exactly the sort of write-up that I appreciate and glad you took the time to write it. Besides, when have I ever been short winded?
