Auto Show

The Detroit auto show was amazing! The Mini exhibit was one of the best of at the show. Plus you can get into the BMW owners lounge again this year with your Mini key. It's a great place to go up to get some water and look over the show. I'll post some pics after I crop them down.

The BMW lounge - what do you do? Where is it? Do you just show them your MINI key? What's up there? I'm going to have to check this out...

The lounge is a loft above the BMW exhibit space. The stairs are just behind the black 7 series. The MINI exhibit was great, even though one of the staff was slightly discourteous to me. Loved the gray S with reddish-orange leather interior.

That is my advice to anybody going. Get as many manufacturer's keys as possible. Most have an owner's lounge that provides free stuff. I have my old VW and Acura keys that I take. This year I am going to try to get my boss to remember to bring me his spare key (he drives a Bentley their lounge is sweet).

Thanks for the tip. Went last night and the owner's lounge was great. We used to be able to get into the GM employee lounge but they haven't been hosting one the past few years. It's always nice to sit down, have a soda, and relax a bit at about mid-way through the exhibits.

Auto show was spectacular! New MINI is nice, but there is no way I would trade mine for one of them. The car got cartooned in my opinion and I totally hate the rear pilar it has a strange shape. The seats in the sidewalk (or whatever the convertable concept was) looked great.

My favorites from teh show were:

1. Ford Edge great job Ford it is just the right size and since they skipped the third row of seats it is comfortable for five. The Mazda built on the same platform (I believe) is terrible there is no leg room in the back seat!

2. Audi R8 looks great in person and is the same size as a TT. All the pictures make it look much bigger.

3. Italian Mustang, just perfect they took enough of the retro out of it and made it look like the modern car it should.

4. Hyundai Azure $30,000 for that thing is a steal it has power everything and the fit and finnish are great.

5. Silverado tail gate. They integrated a step into it so it is wicked easy to get into the bed, even if you are old and stiff in the joints. And double credit to GM for finding a nice big fat guy to demonstrate it all durring the show (if it got his large rear into the bed it will get 99% of people into the bed of the truck) no offense to said guy if he hapens to own a MINI

6. Cayenne, Porsche finnaly put the right front end on their SUV. Still a bad idea, but at least it now looks like a proper Porsche, and a mad one at that. You could almost hear it saying "Yes I am pissed do you know how much crap I got from all the other cars for being a Toureg with different lights? Where is that Grand Cherokee SRT8 I want to kick it in the *** again."

Most dissapointing from the show:

1. Ford's Interceptor the pictures look sooooo good then the actuall car looked horid. I was shocked, because Ford normally does concept cars very well.

2. VW's "limited eddition" GTI and Jettas. They must have bought the wrong color yellow and had to get rid of it so they put some on the outside, some on the inside and then put special name plate and a cheep sticker on the trunk lid, THEN asked people to pay extra for it!

3. Chrysler Sebring vs. Dodge Avenger. One would think that for the extra money they spent on the almost as ugly as an Aztek Sebring they would at least get a better interior. WRONG Daimler Chrysler gave both cars the same interior! The Avenger gets a gold star for being the same shape as the Charger, but not being ugly.

4. Focus coupe. just bad looked OK in pitcures, but in person it just didn't work.

5. 2007 Cooper side markers. A massive step backwards they are not the right porportion (too tall) and there is a crease in the body work around it which to me just did not work. Also the taillights just didn't look right to me, they are not that different, but just looked off a bit.

I am going to have to try that tonight. I scanned down and recognized a good many of them.

Those vents were not good. I am sure someone will fix that.

Someone needs to make a blank to fill in the spot, or make the entire hole a turn light.
