I have the cruise-cam from www.chasecam.com It's less than half the price $45) and very well designed.

The ufmotorsports mount is a little bit home-made looking with the hardware store wingnuts, etc, but the actual camera mount itself is a bit nicer than the one included with the chase-cam.

One nice feature about the cruise-cam is that the camera can be adjusted side to side and mounted either at the end of the rod or very close to the headrest. I have found that vibration is minimized if the camera is as close as possible to the headrest.

Anyway, here are pics of both:

First, the cruise-cam

And then the ufmotorsports version:

I have the ufmotorsports one, and I saw the chasecam in person and like it a hell of a lot more.

A big problem with the ufmotorsports one is that it really doesn't clip onto the headrest well. Even if it does, my camera is pretty heavy and it weighs it down a TON.

I had to do this to keep it level:

I'll be buying a chasecam before my next taping-worty event.

hahahahahahahahahaahahaha

oh man that is funny! did you really have to do that? i never did that and i put mines on the passenger seat. uhm did you forget to insert the plastic pieces they offer? i NEVER had a problem with that. the only problem i had with the camera mount in general is that when the passenger seat is back and i release to move it forward i forget that its in the middle so my head gets hit. boy does it hurt.

not to bash or anything.. yes the chase cam mount is a really nice piece of art. but it does look like it can bend if anything happens. but hey i like the chase cam mount. id get that one over the ufm myself. oh well. lets drop the price

Not to seem stupid or anything, but why would you want to mount a camera in your car like that? I can see a roof mount out the sunroof for an unobstructed view, but isn't there a limited field of view and distortion from the windshield in anything you record from between the seats, not to mention the rear view mirror in the way?

What exactly are you doing?

Here is an alternative solution to mounting your camera. These, VacuCams, will be available for sale in the NAM store hopefully in less than 2 weeks. They come in 1 to 3 camera versions--switchable from the drivers or passenger seat. Super stable, high quality video, and yet half the price of even the least expensive "bullet cam" or "cone cam" cameras. Just plug it into your camcorder, and forget about mounting problems. Each camera can be mounted in about 10 seconds or less. Here one camera is mounted on the drivers door, just behind the front wheel for a very low and dramatic shot.

I've tested this mount up to 115mph on the track with no problems. It's suction/vacuum based, not magnetic, so it won't scratch. Installs and removes very easily once the vacuum is released.

nammerz,

Yes, I used the plastic pieces. I got the mount over a year ago so maybe they improved those pieces...but even with those inserts it just doesn't clamp down tight enough and the camera weighs it down.

JoeDentist,

There is no distortion, and I take off the rear view. I also wanted in the speedo+tach in view for that event.

I made a mount out of 1/4" oak stock. Just took my head rest out and drilled two holes the appropriat size and distance apart added a $20 photo clamp and there you go..
