Air filter control box JCW mini R52 / R53

Hi all !
Please help with advice or a spare part!)

WMWRE310 80TD30508
We have a Mini R53 for which a JCW air filter box was purchased.
Of course, as it turned out, we still need a control unit.
I understand that the task is not easy, but still I hope to find it)

Actually there are two of them:

13 700393779
13 717557876

The mechanic asked if possible to find 13 700393779 .

Please tell me who can sell or what are the options?

Thank you !

Hello and welcome to NAM!

Does the mechanic give a reason to prefer the 13700393779 part number?

I think both are the same actually and 13700393779 may have been the earlier part number which was superseded by 13717557876, but I'm not sure.

Running your VIN indicates a 2004 model year, so perhaps when the mechanic looked he saw the earlier number as proper fitment and playing it safe, but this is speculation on my part. Is the mechanic familiar with modern MINI's?

Anyway,
the control unit is not needed unless you are a purist and desire complete factory originality --- all it does is open a flap at a certain RPM. Most people delete the flap altogether which essentially mimics the John Cooper Motorsport version.

A very simple procedure to "de-flap".

I removed the entire flap assembly from mine as many people here have also done,
and for a long time too,
like this thread is from 2007:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...l-awesome.html

Further searches on NAM will reveal more too.

That said,
I did look for 13700393779 but it seems to be No Longer Available, the 13717557876 does show up as available at some places but unsure if it really is.

^^^ I agree - not needed, unless required for your local regulations (since a Euro-spec R53). I'm another who installed a used JCW airbox without the "control unit". Mine didn't include those parts but the "flap" was still in place, held open with a screw which I removed along with the flap. You will also need the unique JCW bulkhead "partition" to draw fresh air from the cowl, however those are still available new from MINI/BMW warehouse locations as are the foam gasket between the airbox and that partition.

At this point, it's unlikely to find all the missing parts unless purchasing a complete JCW airbox such as this one advertised by a NAM member in Canada. Asking price USD $1000 plus cost of shipment and import fees added to that if shipped to Europe would not be practical for most buyers.

Hi all ! First of all, thank you so much for your responses!

It is quite real that the ecu are similar, especially since the second number matches the model too. By the way, I do not fully know the logic why he asks for the first number.

On this topic :
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...l-awesome.html
I understand correctly - the absence of a flap is observed only on sound?

We have the essence of installing a control unit in the needs of the owner of the car - he asked to bring everything to the factory state.

13717557876 I see that it is theoretically possible to purchase, but I leave this option as a last resort.
According to the diagram, it visually differs in connection, but this is a diagram, and not an actual photo of the part, so I’m not 100% sure here either.

I just double checked on those and both are NLA in the system though MINI. Any MINI dealer that shows it will just cancel after placed.

Here you can see the old module, all it did was open the flap at a rev number, most people just used to zip tie the flap open.

RA used to do most of the electronics for MINI and they did some of the ones for the F56 JCW tuning kits, i talked to one of the Product managers from MINIUUSA back in day when they produced them.

Most of the older Gen 1 MINI JCW was produced with MINI/Rover suppliers in the UK..... I have seen early JCW parts from the R56 platform (like my tuning kit tube intake) that's have the Old "Cooper" Logo someone transferred what was left of the supplier to BMW group. I like the old Cooper logo.

John Cooper grandson is now focused on bikes and still stuff with new MINI. https://www.instagram.com/charliecooper007/?hl=en

Adding to the above posted by ECS Tuning, the Motoring File article linked below written 17 years ago includes this content from that;

In order to meet Euro noise regulations and to generally make it a very livable modification, MINI gave it two modes of operation. Below 4500 rpms the intake pulls in air like most intakes, through a larger cone air filter through the standard tubing. However above 4500 rpms a flap in the back of the intake opens and draws cold air from the left cowl (below the windshield) to increase air-flow. This results in a surge of power and some glorious supercharger whine.

Yeah, one of the first things that I did my 06, JCW, was to move the air filter box, butterfly...to the glove compartment !
Let it breath.

I'm the purist who wants the original setup.

I've discovered that there is the retrofit JCW harness and the factory JCW harness. The latter is a fully connectorized cable assembly, whereas the retrofit kit is a collection of loose wires, some connectors, the box, wire taps, eyelets etc.

That might account for your two part numbers. I will have both in hand shortly and can take a photo for you all.

Hello . Yes, there is very little open information, and if you can add something, then, of course, it will not be superfluous. Thank you !
