New JCW tire size ordering

If you were ordering a new JCW, would you order the 17 or 18 inch wheel/tire and why? Just curious....

If "I" was ordering a new JCW, "I" would get 18's because (1) to see those beautiful big brake calipers, (2) I like the handling response the 18's would provide, and (3) the 3rd gen Minis just look better with bigger wheels.

Get the standard 17" wheels and order better 18" from Tire Rack.

I run 17" wheels for the following reasons:

1. they allow 215/45 tires which have sufficient sidewall to protect the wheel (and me) from pavement defects, and provide a more gentle ride
2. they are lighter, which improves acceleration, braking, and suspension compliance

You may note from my signature that I am a veteran Regional (and National) autocrosser - until I retired this year - so my build was influenced by my desire for top handling on course. I am a bit skeptical of the view that larger wheels and shorter sidewalls produce better handling, that has not been my experience over the last four Minis and 15 years of competition.

But some folks set their ride height and wheel size to suit their eye, and to each their own I reckon.

My learnings on the 3rd Gen JCW are all here somewhere.

Cheers,

Charlie

Personally, I think the 17" is the sweet spot for these cars. As Charlie mentioned, you can run 215/45-17s which improve ride and handle very well. The plus is that the 17's are lighter, which actually improves performance. I also think they look just fine, but some like the bigger wheel look. It's really up to what you want.

I use right from the F56 Start 2015, 225/45/17 it works well, you also get much more temperature into the tire for high performance.

My 19x8's are only 18lbs each so it is the best of both worlds. There is the concern of potholes ruining a wheel though so based on roads in your it is a factor.

17" because the tire selection for 18's is nonexistent if you want to drive your MINI year around
