2019 JCW Mini new brakes at 22k miles

So, they were metal to metal -- at only 22k miles. I apologize in advance that I do not recall the specifics that the mechanic told me, but he said something about the front brakes being wildly stronger than the rear ones, and so could create a bias for the rear brakes to work much harder and so, wear out faster.

But is it just my driving? I have had to slam on my brakes probably 2x only in the 2 years that I've had it. I do NOT ride my brakes, quite the opposite. I do tend to speed... don't all Mini drivers? lol

What is the deal with them wearing out so fast? Just looking for some genuine advice -- I don't really want to get rid of this Mini if I don't have to but I also don't want to have to replace the discs and rotors every 22k miles. What am I possibly doing wrong?

I am convinced that Mini uses soft pads, which explains all the dust they throw off. You should be able to get away with just pads at 22k miles, but you might want to look into a less dusty pad compound to try and get more miles out of them.

The guy said I needed new rotors too -- they are trustworthy I believe them. I mean, he told me they would just do this again lol I doubt if I brought it into the dealership they would have told me that problem.

Maybe its time to learn how to perform a brake job yourself and save a few bucks. You could probably do all four corners for less than your mechanic is charging for the rears alone.

Well yes but I would need to invest in all kinds of things to do that, wouldn't I -- don't I need something to jack up the back? I'd love to learn how to do it myself... just don't know where to start.

Yeah, if you have never performed any of your own maintenance, you would need to invest in a bunch of tools.

I've had 2 prior Minis. The first one needed front brakes at about 55k miles. I don't think that Mini rotors can be "turned" they have to be replaced with the pads. I got rid of it at 70k miles with original rear brakes. The other JCW Mini I traded last year with the original brakes at about 55k miles.

I replaced the "original" 2017 Honda Accord front rotors/pads at 20k they looked like a old 45 record, shook/shuttered like crazy. Dealer did not warranty them, got 80k from my Odyssey brakes for ref.
Post a pic of your brakes/rotors. You can also see/feel if there are any groves in the rotors (only when brakes are cold).

I had to replace both, front and rear brake pads at around 23k miles, discs were totally fine - I bought OEM pads just because I hate the noises I've had on almost all my previous aftermarket pads. I'm fine with replacing the pads every 23k miles or so since I drive pretty spiritedly and I love my '19 JCW. If I were you I'd just have them replace the pads/sensors and call it a day.

2018 JCW @ ~87k.

Brake replacement history: Front pads/rotors 27,651 -- Rear pad/rotor 44,744 -- Front pad/rotor 63,638 -- Front and rear pad/rotor 82,368. About 30k for the fronts and 40k for the rears I reckon...

This car has about 8 trips to the Dragon, and ~70 autocross runs.

Cheers,

Charlie

Mine needed to be changed at 25,000 km. 22k miles sounds great by comparison. I have an automatic clubman S. I think winter and limited pandemic driving did them in. They were fading and hissing, rusted up veins and hats. Probably still a little life in the rears but much happier having started fresh with new oem pads and Zimmerman rotors.

One additional note....

The eLSD can be a significant source of brake wear, if one is in marginal traction.

Marginal traction for my car is anything less than dry pavement and very good 200tw tires. On winter tires I can spin the front end with the throttle on any surface in 2nd gear. So I don't. I also got a Quaife. Cured.

But before the Quaife, I made a Tail of the Dragon run in the foggy damp of the early morning... I ran south to north, and in light of the slightly greasy road I never pushed.

Nonetheless, when I pulled in at the overlook, the front brakes were blued. That is the ONLY time they ever did that.

My three previous Minis could blue the brakes in good conditions with a fast run, but this Works car does not. But....

That one run, the eLSD was dragging a brake out of every corner, and I was using both entering the next one. With ten seconds between corners on that road, the brakes could not cool.

Lesson learned.

Cheers,

Charlie

does this 2022 JCW hardtop have mechanical LSD with torque vectoring? Or a bunch of fake stuff + torque vectoring. I really hate torque vectoring. FWD cars have to have it though it seems. i wonder if Veloster N has it. they have "ediff" too.

The only MINI that I know with a mechanical LSD is the GP. You can get one fitted after purchasing (Quaife sells them).

I am having difficulty finding them for F56 level mini's. Do you know of a seller here?

I did the rear pads and rotors on my 19 JCW at 32k, yes rotors. I attribute the early change to only driving my Mini about 3k miles in the past year. My last 2 Minis I didn't touch pads and rotors at all and both had over 40k when I sold them.

did 2019 have the Brembo's as the 2022's do?

What type of driving did you do?

hey that is nice :D

Thank you. Do you know what other parts one needs to put that in? I see an option on there that has bearings or no bearings. How much of a job is this?

Best talking with a shop about costs. You could reach out to Lohen in the UK to get a parts list, etc. They are an authorized dealer.

Hi there, I bought this full, brand new kit from a forum member some time ago but never installed it - let me know if you want to get it. I'm in Riverdale/Bronx - I'd let it all go for $1100 (was over $1400 when new):
