05 JCW Sound Clips
05 JCW Sound Clips
Here are some sound clips that I took of my new 05 JCW. There seems to be a lot of different questions that people have regarding the exhaust sound on the new '05 JCW. These were recorded digitally through a DAT tape deck and saved as MP3s. Save the files to disk and then play them.
Idle outside of the car at exhaust level from a distance of two feet:

Reving across a wide range of revs at 3' above the ground and 6' from the rear of the car:

Thanks for taking the time to record and post this information!
my take:
jeez, the fuel mapping is totally out of control with all that overrun popping
I'd guess they gained some power by tightening up the fuel map, but then trashed the fuel economy back to pre '05 spec by doing this "sporty-esque" simulated popping.
For reference, here is MOTOR'N's MCS from the '04 Exhaust Shootout at The Dragon that has about 215cHP and full Milltek exhaust. Note only slight burble, much better fuel management.

I think the sound is very similiar to an '05 MCS, but still a little more throatier. At full throttle in the 6000+ rpm range it is much more louder than stock. I will try to get some sounds of drive bys at full throttle in the upper rev range. Both exterior and interior wise. No drone in this exhaust and if you were just cruising down the street in anything less than 4500 rpm you can't tell a difference over stock, at least not to my ears.
The burble sounds worse just reving the car in neutral. There is a ton of burble and popping sounds. You still have quite a bit when driving, but I would say it is about half as pronounced.

Your engine 'crackles' like an old Porsche! How cool. My Cooper has a Racing Dynamics Exhaust, and coold air intake. I will have to try and make some recordings of it and post them to compare!

Ya know, I had the JCW "upgrade" kit installed about a month ago. Since then I have noticed the popping sound on the overrun.
Sounds pretty cool in my opinion! (Was'nt there before hmmmm)
Using the on board computer my gas mileage has not changed in the normal rippin around. (27mpg) On long highway trips though I have improved to 37 mpg, from 33mpg. That's runnin around 75-80 mph.
Driving the car at 8/10's on curvey roads I'll average 25.
Now I hav'nt seen anyone say It but the software update with the kit changed many other things...cruise control now within 1 mph , was +-5!
throttle control feels more connected to car, very smooth from cold start to hot idle blah blah bla sorry
back to point... I don't think the mileage was hurt at all and possibly the sound (popping) is due to the increased air from the intake reacting with the current JCW exhaust. My exhaust tips are now running considerably less black leading me to believe the fuel management is more efficient.
They (JCW) may have intended this all along but had to wait for BMW"s mileage testing to be done before offering the "upgrade" (which is included in the 05 kits).
That being said, one of the coolest sounding exhaust i"ve heard was the sound clip on UUC's website for the UUC exhaust. Listen to that one on the overrun. WOW!
If what you say is so, excess fuel is used to make popping sound, the cat would burn up in no time, the ce lit would go off and flames would be shooting out the pipes. NOW that would be cool!!
To say you can judge fuel management by the sound of the exhaust is....well... not in agreement with my thinking.
that is all -cheers

Somehow JCW exhaust just too quite. If I had JCW I would put aftermarket exhaust in place just to get more sound for 200hp title.
I love popping sound...The more the better!...Mine even do burb a little when I release the throttle while driving at 70-80mph.

My tailpipes have cleaned up quite a bit as well. The amount of black on my tailpipes has decreased about 90%. It takes a few weeks for the black to really start showing up.
Some people may even want more noise from there exhaust, but for me the sound is quite loud at Full Throttle. I wouldn't want much more from a 4-cylinder. Now if I had a V-8, definitely more.
