Question F60 JCW Owners: ASD Yes or No?

ASD = Active Sound Design (aka piped in car sounds in cabin). i just got my 2020 JCW CTM and after the first 100 miles have decided to see what its like w/ASD off. i noticed there was a slight hum whenever i had my Clyde on but not started. after coding it off, hum is gone. haven't taken him out for a drive but will report back tomorrow my thoughts (even though i'm in my break-in period so nothing above 4200rpms).

so your thoughts? Yay or Nay?

Older thread but I turned mine off via Bimmercode and definitely prefer it that way. It's quiet when just puttering around but has a nice growl from the engine bay under load and still gets the aggressive bark from the tail pipes while shifting. To me the car has a nice sound just the way Mini set it up and the ASD was actually drowning it out a large degree. But that's just my opinion.

I haven't tried turning it off yet. Guess I will have to this weekend and see if I like it better.

I have the NM Engineering downpipe-back exhaust. I often roll the back windows down so I can hear it better. I'd probably like mine off. But, I don't have the fancy electronic gadgets required to do so. Even without the exhaust flap valve, there is a noticeable difference in the over-run burbles as well as the BARK when gears shift in Mid-mode vs Sport-mode. So, Sport-mode definitely does more than just turn on the ASD and open an exhaust flap on the OEM muffler.

That is correct. Sport mode definitely gives you more aggressive exhaust noises. And yes, there is some cost involved to turn off the ASD (I bought a wireless adaptor for $99 on Amazon and then paid the ~$30 for the Bimmercode software for my phone) but in my case I will get more use out of those items over the life of the vehicle so over time the cost will be worth it.

That being said if you can find someone with the right software you could probably get them to turn off your ASD for you for free. I would definitely be willing for a fellow owner.

I got BimmerLink by the makers of BimmerCode. It has a toggle to turn on and off ASD on the fly...and the setting sticks across car shutdowns and restarts. Interesting to be driving on a road with the engine growl and turn ASD off and having the car go from growl to silent.

Hmm, I didn't see that in the Bimmercode App. Mine just has the ability to turn it off in the app when connected to the ODB port. How do you turn it on and off on the fly? Thanks.

Edit: Sorry, I misread your post. Missed "Bimmerlink" I'll check it out.

Use the Bimmerlink app and leave the ODBII interface connected to the car. You can pull up real-time data and toggle a few things like ASD and the sport tailpipe valve in the app. You can also download all the trouble codes, messages and other data to diagnose any trouble-lights or system errors. You can clear errors as well. Even lets you build a custom dashboard in the app to display real-time data from any sensor in the car...and there are hundreds.

I use BimmerLink as well to turn OFF ASD and open or close the exhaust flap. Works well

NOTE: if you have disabled ASD IN bimmer code, the bimmerlink will not work. You will have to go back to bimmercode update from a backup and make it unassigned. Then you can go to bimmerlink and use it to toggle off and on.

I have the ASD module in my MINI. So now I just need to find a person who has a '19 F55 S (LCI or Later e.g., '20+) that has ASD working so that I might be able to copy the settings they see when in Bimmercode.

Thank you!
