Just bought a 2010 hardtop jcw

The dealers told me that when it's in sport mode I would hear a popping(almost like a backfire) upon deceleration. I havnt noticed such popping. As far as I'm aware all parts are still oem with no mods done. I had read some people saying the popping sound was taken away in the S model but still remained in the jcw. Doe anyone have any insight or better knowledge of the situation than I do? Any response is appreciated as I really enjoy hearing that noise on some videos I've seen. I'm gonna stop typing before this turns into a book. Thank again in advance

No popping in 'sport' mode either?
Edit: sorry didn't read

It seems to vary by model year. My car has it whether in sport mode or not.

It's a very distinct sound. You'd recognize it right away if it were there.

No popping (that I've noticed) period. The exhaust already has the "burble". Or at least I think it sounds like it but no popping. I love the car either way but I would like it to do what the dealers said it would do.

I realize yours is a 2010...mine's a 2013 with 900 miles on it...not a lot of popping, but some slight gurgle on decel. I took it to the dealer to get the helipad put on it and the loaner was a 2013 MCS with 250 miles on it...and it popped so loudly I thought the exhaust was going to blow off the car! Absolutely loud as heck and so much more obnoxious than my exhaust note...I was quite a little annoyed.

The pop/burble seems to happen (in my '12 S, anyway) when the car is decelerating and around 2000-2500 rpm range. I have an auto so if I am doing, say 35 mph then let off the gas, there is a slight pause, then the pop/burble happens. It also happens when braking lightly, I've noticed and the car downshifts putting it in the 2-2.5k range. I'm assuming you have a manual since you didn't say but maybe your shift points are taking you out of the 'magic' range?

UPDATE: I just drove home in sport mode and didn't/couldn't really hear it if it was popping, but when I got home I gave it a good rev and as the rpms went down its started popping pretty good. Should've seen the grin on my face...

It also has to be fully warmed up and its hard to hear with the windows up. Glad you got the pop!

MINI_42,

I thought I was the only one that felt like this about my JCW. Anyhow, I feel the same with my new 2013 JCW compared to my 2011 MCS. The MCS had a stock exhaust as well, and it had the loud backfire-like pops. I've only been able to reproduce this kind of "pop" on my JCW maybe once or twice in ~1650 miles when downshifting. And still, it wasn't as loud as my old MCS. But the fact that it has done it, leads me to believe that we just have to be patient. (Crossing fingers)

What I can hear is mostly gurgling on decel, but also through a bigger RPM range. The overall tone on the JCW is much deeper vs the MCS. The MCS was very specific (2200-2800 rpm's on mine) for the pop and burble.

I'm hoping it just takes a bit longer to break it in? My old MCS started popping within the first 100 miles. I remember you from the waiters' support group and our production date is only a few months apart. Perhaps, there is a correlation to this quiet gurgling and lack of pops?

Hi there Kilmer!

The rate I'm going, maybe I'll get it run in by March? I haven't driven it for 6 weeks now, so still sitting at 900 miles.

Thinking back about the MCS, I feel it was a little too loud, obnoxious even, especially since I wasn't even driving assertively - it's the kind of sound that should be worked for, not just delivered as you're slowing down to pull into the shopping centre.

It's funny, the SA when he realized mine was JCW as opposed to MCS, he became quite excited and told me when it hits 1500 miles I have to drive it like it was supposed to be driven.

Anyway, I would like to see more popping and gurgling, but I don't want to work so hard for it that I feel like I'm racing on public streets. Keeping my fingers crossed, but it seems clear that an MCS with 250 miles vs a JCW with 900 on it has the sound we all seek and the JCW does not, at least not in the same intensity and without effort.

As a side note, we had a 2007 MCS we bought new and I never heard any popping or gurgling in the 7000 miles we owned it.

Mike

I'm pretty sure the MCS didn't have the pop until 2011+ because some people hated it in the 02-06 models so they took it out then people wanted it back. Correct me of I'm wrong

My wife's '13 S Cab pops very loudly in Sport mode, which is why she rarely runs it in Sport.
My '13 JCW almost never pops, and when it does, it's very quiet about it.
Personally, I like the burble (which both our MINIs do), but I'm not a big fan of the loud pop. Different strokes...

My '13 JCW burbled from day one in sport mode. After about 300kms it's even louder and pops pretty loud now and then. Makes me laugh every time.

Slap a catless DP on. You'll get your sound.

Not sure how/why, but my GP2, with the same jcw exhaust, pops and bangs pretty loudly when in sport... definitely loud enough to turn off sport in town.

It's probably the tune difference between the GP and the regular JCW
