JB4 - Stage 1 x Stage 2 - What are the differences?

Hi,

I would like to know if someone knows the difference (hp, torque, and things you can change in the car using it, and etc) between JB4 stage 1 and stage 2?

Does anyone know if it is possible to have the bluetooth connection and the JB4 APP running in the JB4 installed in the Mini?

Thanks!

Although not a JCW, if you search on YouTube for 100% MINIs there are a few videos about the conversion of a MINI 210 to Stage 1 and 2 that might give you a brief overview.

Map 1 should give approx. +35 hp and +35 lbs torque
Map 2 should give approx. +60 hp and +60 lbs torque

This may depend on quality of fuel and between car to car but should give you some idea. The map can be changed via the on boad computer stalk or JB4 app

The optional bluetooth module is designed to work with Android and Apple JB4 mobile app

Thanks for the reply, but I have one doubt:

When you are talking about Map 1 and Map 2, are you referring to Stage 1 and Stage 2, or just the programming maps that you can select having JB4 Stage 1.

My main question is that I want to know how many more hp and lbs of torque I will have if I pay the extra $150 and go with Stage 2, instead of Stage 1.

There are 2 map settings that can be used for Mini F56 B48 (map1 or map2)

Some use term Stage 1, Stage 2 but these references are not on JB4 but are usually just some are used to using the "stage" term as it's used widely in tuning circles

Map 1 is up to 4psi boost where as Map 2 is up to 6 psi boost

Stage1 - original Burger Piggyback. plugs into the car via engine bay. changes can be made via serial cable connected to phone or laptop. out of the box it is set to +3.5psi but i was running +6psi and few other guys had it on +7 (with higher octane fuel)

JB4 (what you call stage 2) - same cabling as stage1. updated circuitboard.
added: OBD plug that goes to the JB4 circuitboard. this allows a few things.

- pre-defined maps that can be changed via the stalk method (note that on stage1, there are no maps...just 1 setup, and must use laptop)
-map1 is preset at +4psi
-map2 is preset at +6psi
-there are more maps, including a "disable jb4" map. all enabled via the BDC Stalk on the steering wheel.

furthermore, the OBD plug allows for "auto-clear" of the CEL, disabled ASD, as well as 100% brightness on the halo's. this does nothing for performance. just cute add-ons.

as for your original question, technically speaking, both stage 1 and JB4 do the same thing, so the power is equal. one can argue that the additional data that is being collected will only allow the JB4 to run better, so power can be better considering the more variables it can read. but, it's the same.

if you feel like you may want to change maps at times, then JB4 is required.

i will also add that the stage1, while available, will not have anymore updates. only the Jb4 will be updated.

Thank you Marco Polo! You clarified my doubts.

I'm almost certain that I will go with JB4 (Stage 2) with the Bluetooth connector and the extremely expensive JB4 APP for the iPhone ($28 is really expensive).

1) i'm with you on the app. it's completely insane at that price.
2) i hate the bluetooth add-on price as well. highway robbery.

if you feel like shaving some $$, you can do this...

my take on the high cost of bluetooth and the app...it was something that was never thought of by terry...someone else took on the approach of coming up with the BT product as well as the App and so they are now financially benefiting from it.

What other mods would you need to safely run with 6+ psi of boost. Not including race fuel.

I would get on the n54tech forum below and ask the question directly to BMS to get accurate information. Terry is very good at replying to questions.

My perspective is this.
Had a stage 1 tune in my 2014 MCS.
Paid the extra $ and upgrades to the jb4 for my JCW
Using 93 octane gas and ruining Map 2. Power about as much as you can use in a fwd car imo. The torque is crazy (around 23 ft lbs of boost). It makes the car feel more like a v6.
2 days ago I was more on gas and could only find 91 octane do dialed the jb4 back to map 1. It feels like someone stuck a rag in the exhaust the downgrade in torque and power is unbelievable. I really notice how much more time it takes to overtake in the 60 to 80mph range.
I know this whole jb4 thing is mega $ when to buy the whole Bluetooth thing and app...but it is so great and easy to use. Tech support is also above average. If you want a 300 hp JCW this is the way to go.
